UG Exclusive: Nita Strauss Shares Her No. 1 Tip for Improving Guitar Playing

"Get on that metronome, make it your best friend, and..."

Ultimate Guitar

Guitar champion Nita Strauss (Alice Cooper, The Iron Maidens) shared her No. 1 tip for improving your guitar performance exclusively for UG.

She says in the video: "What's up everyone at Ultimate Guitar! I'm Nita Strauss and I'm here to give you my top guitar tip, which is utilizing the metronome.

"It seems like a no-brainer, I know, but a lot of people aren't doing it. So today, I'm going to walk you through the steps that I used with the metronome when I have something new to learn.

Stressing how it's crucial to start slow and execute the lick flawlessly before raising the tempo, Nita noted:

"If you let a sloppy one slide through, you're really just hurting yourself. So do yourself a favor, be diligent and play it five times properly before moving up any faster.

"The lick we're gonna do for this example is a three-string sweep arpeggio starting in a minor pattern and moving to a major pattern."

Check out the video below for the full thing.

    Beautiful guitar.
Ibanez S5521Q-TAB in case you wondered.
No one cares about that... UG users are here for the boobs.. (at least I know I am)!
That makes one of us you douche-cannon. What artists use helps give insight into how they get their sound. She might inspire someone who wants to get her grit or clarity or switch from jackson to ibanez. She's actually phenomenal on guitar, give her talent the respect it deserves man. That said, no shit she's fucking smoking hot.
Beautiful top, no pickup rings (I hate them), tasteful inlays and binding and that awesome body the S-series guitars have. I fucking love that guitar. I just with Ibanez could figure out how to make them without the plastic shroud covering the pickup switch.
Very useful tip, plenty people should take a look at the metronome, it's a very simple, yet important tool.

Did she just say "You have to play slowingly, before you can play fasticly?" DID SHE? Blew my mind, right there. Everything went black for a moment.
Haha I heard that too. Turns out she's saying "You have to play slow and clean, before you can play fast and clean". But she said it too fasticly and not slowingly enough.
Oh boi, that girl is gorgeous... Wait! I'm talking about the guitar of course seriously though people. If you never used a metronome, it may be the time for you to start using it. It's such a powerful tool not only beneficial for keeping up the tempo, but also to play as clean as possible. Thank you Nita for your tip and exercise!
I used it to learn the alternate picking run to the solo in the song "Follow the Signs" by Born of Osiris. Very helpful, don't use it enough.
I'm keeping a "Steady Beat" right now if you know what I'm sayin!...
I saw Nita's workshop in guitar store new my home in my shitty little European country and she's just awesome. Super cool and down to earth and SMOKING HOT. When she starts to shred the fuck out of that guitar in front of you, now that's's the whole package! Beautiful girl with mad guitar skills. Go Nita!
She's right. It can sometimes hurt when you let a sloppy one slide through.
