Introduction:

My Friend Of Misery - Metallica. This riff is the intro to one of their best songs from their self-titled album which is more commonly known as The Black Album. The song starts with a slow bass riff in A minor which is repeated 4 times then the guitars come crashing in with some A power chords.

Techniques:

This is a fairly simple riff to play. It starts A-F-D and repeats twice but on the second time instead of going to the D he goes to A on the fourteenth fret. He continues the riff with another D then an A then instead of playing the main three notes he changes the F for a G then plays A-F-D again. The next 2 bars of the riff are similar but moved down by a tone. Jason plays this with a pick which you will need to do as well so you can let all the notes ring. Jason alternate picks the riff so everything on the A string is down picked but the notes on the D and G strings are played with an upstroke except for the F-A or the E-G part on the G-string where he plays an upstroke on the first note but plays a downstroke on the next note then he continues with an upstroke on the D string then plays it the same as before. When playing the riff you should use your index finger to fret the 10th fret on the G-string, your middle finger for the 12th fret on the A-string and they should be left the so the notes can ring after you've played them. When he moves up to the fourteenth fret use your pinkie to play that note and leave it there for as long as possible then use your ring finger to fret the 12th fret on the G-string, repeat the same patter for the next two bars. The last time the riff is played before leading into the verse he holds the last E on the G string for a quarter note and slides down which leads into the verse.

Gear Info:

Jason Newsted plays Sadowsky bass guitars in the studio through a 1974 Ampeg SVT Head running into an Ampeg Cabinet. His 4-strings are strung with .105 - .45 Ernie Ball strings and his 5-strings are strung with .128-.45 La Bella strings and he uses a 1 millimetre gauge pick.

Unseen_hero: I don't like metallica, but that's a cool sounding riff. i'd like to see some fugazi riffs. They have some sweet scaling/jazz influence to them and they're pretty fast.

That riff is rather hardcore. Almost makes me want to listen to Metallica...almost...but not quite.
