Hello fellow UGers! I am glad to announce that the Weekend Riffs series after a 3-months hiatus returns to the main page of Ultimate-Guitar.Com. Thanks to marchoso, porcupineoris and Weebl who have teamed up to bring it back.

Introduction:

Tommy The Cat - Primus. This bass riff is the main lick from the live version of Tommy The Cat. It is pretty much the same as the studio version except it is played on a fretted 4 string and the studio version is on a fretless 6 string which I don't think many of you will have lying around!

Techniques:

This lick is mainly the same the whole way through but Les puts in a lot of improvised fills, the most common of these has been included in the tab. This is played fairly fast and can be very difficult to pick up. The main part to take notice of is the double stop (2 notes played at once) in the first beat of every bar. Les strums this with his fingernails in a downwards motion and in the fourth bar he hits the strings on the way up as well. The other part that can be pretty difficult is all the muted slaps and pops in the second half of the bar as you get no time in between the notes so you have to be constantly slapping, the only thing that you can really do is start slow then once you play it perfectly at that speed then get a bit faster until you can play it all at the correct tempo. Everything on the D and G strings is popped with the exception of the double stop which is strummed and everything on the E string is slapped.

Gear Info:

Les Claypool plays a Carl Thompson fretted 4 string for this song and used a Mesa-Boogie cabinet.

that sounds awesome. it is tougher than i expected, especially because i don't slap and pop all that often. i'll have to practice it.

Tommy The Cat is on a 6 string, but this 4 string works too. I play it a lil different, but I guess that could be personal preference.

Man that sounds so sick. Les is the man. No one else writes stuff like that.

marchoso and porcupineoris are preparing "guitar riff" article for the next saturday. everyone is welcome, though to keep it less chaotic and more organized, it should be not more than 5-7 people.

There should be a private forum open to the people doing this, so they can communicate amongst each other so that three arnt released on one weekend and there is not a weekend one isn't done, as well as so the other writers can look over the posts before it is sent in. Each member could have his own style to (For bass, we could have a guy who does it on new music, another on more funkish slap style, another who wants to tab punkm etc).

high voltage: Excellent, I'm glad to see weekend riffs back and running, although this one seems quite short. The tab is only two riffs long, I really think it should be longer, there isn?t much to learn?
well it was requested by a lot of people and this is really all there is to the whole song, other than a couple of fills and an improv solo which there is no way id be able to tab it out, but this is fairly challenging so it might take a bit longer to learn than you would think by looking at the tab, anyway ill make sure the next is longer then

Regarding the concept of weekend riffs, does this mean only marchoso, porcupineoris and Weebl are permitted to write them?
