Introduction:

System Of A Down - Spiders. When Rage Against The Machine disappeared into the night, at least until Audioslave, System Of A Down jumped at the opportunity to become the world forefront political nu-metal band. While they're busy in the studio working on their fourth studio album, let's go back to their roots with this classic opening to spooky track from the self-titled debut album Spiders.

Techniques:

The intro is simple enough, just a syncopated rhythm on the low (very low in this CGCFAD tuning) strings. Then, one finger chord your way through the C5 power chord and begin on the more difficult octave section. Fret the simple shape with the first and third fingers then mute the fourth string with your second finger.

Finally, return to a take on the intro with the same octaves and low string riff. The difficulty throughout will always be the odd rhythm, so pay careful attention to the audio below or the original recording if you are lucky enough to own it. You will of course require that Ibanez Iceman drop tuned to and a clean tone (on the Marshall Mode 4, no less) for the intro then flick to the dirty channel to play the heavy section using the neck pickup.

I'd like to point out how there was nothing before this saying this would be a song I don't like. I just like to look at the weekend riffs.

Well.... it will sound almost exactly the same if you just do Drop D. All the relationships between strings will be the same. YOU DO NOT NEED TO MATCH THE BAND'S EXACT TUNING. It'll only sound bad if you play it with the actual song.

Well if you have more than 1 guitar, keep them in different tunings like I do. I have one for Drop C (System) and one step down (It's also a 7-string so I play KoRn on it), one for standard and Drop D, and one for a half step down and C# (Linkin Park, Green Day).

Kinda reminds me of "Between Angels And Insects" by Papa Roach. System Of A Down rock!

I'm with Slash on this. Its cool, but I'm really not in a 'tune my guitar down to Drop C' kinda mood right now. It doesn't sound too bad in just drop D. And in standard, the first bits sound like a Megadeth song, especially if you were to palm mute the E's.
