Introduction:

Friday, I'm In Love - The Cure. The Cure's Friday, I'm In Love is rather experimental of the band who's career has spanned several decades. It is quite upbeat in comparison to much of the band's other music and makes for some great multi-guitar playing. There are literally buckets of tab here! The first bar shows how to play the first intro motif, which is played on both guitars simultaneously, giving a sound similar to delay. The second seciton shows guitar one's rhythm part that follows the acoustic chords (shown above the tab) closely. Finally, the overlaying riff is shown in the third section.

The guitar parts here have a two different, but very tonally similar. Because of the similarity, they give the impression of a single guitar part and it could be arranged as a single fingerpicking piece. Alternatively, a delay pedal with a long enough memory could allow you to record the second section of tab, overlay the third section on the next two loops and then continue with a chordal motif through the song.

Techniques:

For guitar 1, fret the chords shown above the tab, using a pick or the fingers if preferred. Do not fret any of the chords, except the Bm, as barre chords or you will find it quite difficult to play the suspensions (sus2 and sus4). Guitar 2 is looser in feel but the rhythm needs to be tight when playing with another guitarist or the melody the two instruments create will break down. In the case of guitar 2, do not let the slide in the second bar or the double stops in bar 13 catch you unawares. Also, be careful of the change in rhythm between bars 6-8 and 14-16 as it could be easy to accidentally duplicate it on the second loop of the chord progression.

Gear Info:

It is likely that a Telecaster and Stratocaster were used as guitars 1 and 2 respectively, and singlecoils are a must. Some chorus is also used. The acoustic guitar is definately a 12-string.

Gear Settings:

The two electric parts are very clean, with a slightly accentuated treble. Try settings in the region of

  • Treble: 7
  • Mid: 5
  • Bass: 4
  • Reverb: 3

one of my favourite songs! I've only ever found tabs for the chords of it, never the lead part. Thanks. by the way, i think the very first note is an open g instead of a.
