Introduction:

The Police - Every Breath You Take. The beauty of The Police was the mixture of simple music that seemed fit for a love song and haunting lyrics which is the unsettling motif seen throughout the band's music. The delicate melody riff tabbed here comes complete with the disturbing views of a stalker that is often lost on casual listeners.

Techniques:

The way this piece of music's sound is the odd choice of chords voicings that became Sumner's trademark and the add9 and sus2 voicings form two clear shapes on the fretboard.

The trick to playing the riff is to have a few extra fingers but failing that the add9 chords require the player to move the first finger between the sixth and third string while the sus2 shape uses the third and fourth finger to move between the notes on the G-string. Two riffs are used in the most part of the song, a verse and chorus riff, and both are given here, as well as the chords just in case you can't play the riff while you're warbling your Sting impressions. Play the Intro/Verse riff 3 times before jumping to the Chorus riff then back to the verse. (The midi file gives the Verse riff twice so you can hear it with the two different bass-lines.)

If you're going to sing along, make sure you stress those vowels to get Sting's powerful sound!

Photos show that in Sumner played a Telecaster or Strat through his time with the police and the bridge pickup and constant muting of notes to keep them staccato is the best tactic. The song is detuned just over a 1/4 tone but sounds best in Eb standard.

for me, this way isn't that hard, you just have to spread your index and pinky finger across 5 frets :\

this tab is great. And i can play it cuz i can spread my fingers across six frets but i can see how ppl with smaller hands would have problems. But again great atb keep up the good work.

Gordon Sumner is the bass player, Andy Summers is the guitar player. It's actually not that hard to play. It's also a lot easier if you get a capo and put it on the second fret.

You guys who posted before me make me feel like I have massive hands. I grasped it no problems whatsoever. Very accurate tab. Great.
