which amp
Budget:ABSOLUTE MAX- 800 (around 1300 dollars)
Genres: Alt rock (decent cleans are needed, not a neccesity though) up to prog metal (dream theater, symphony x)
New or used: Preferably new, but will buy used if i can try the amp)
Head/Cab or combo is fine.
I am in London.
I have been considering a Carvin V3m and Harley Benton 2x12 V30 cab. How would this be?

Give a Mark IV a try.

^ for 800? What do you want him to do, invest the 800 in bankrobbing equipment? :haha

back to the original question- i haven't tried the carvin v3m. So

I haven't tried this either, but it's a similar idea so i'll let you know about it with the caveat this isn't a recommendation and you need to do your own research on it at your own risk- musicstore in cologne seems to be blowing out the dvmark bad boy 120 and triple 6 heads for around 700. I wasn't actually that impressed with musicstore (only dealt with them once, never again, frankly), but i guess it's worth letting you know so you at least have all the info and can make your own mind up.

It's hard to go wrong with the harley benton 2x12 with v30s if you need/want a v30-loaded plywood cab on the cheap.

^ He said 800 (around 1300 dollars) you could get a Mark IV combo for around that.

I have the V3M and I love it.
I was complaining about not enough gain on tap, but I hooked up my new noise suppressor a bit ago, and i found out my other one was drawing away from my tone.
It is truly one of the most versatile amps I have ever owned, and I can't recommend it enough.
Plus it gives you the option of rack mounting to build an awesome rack set up ;D

My avatar cab has a v30 and the gt75 speaker combo, and it sounds fantastic. So what you're looking at should work out just fine.
And the V3M is plenty loud enough. I haven't left the lowest watt setting yet in my bedroom, and I already know the 50 watt setting is more than enough to cut through the mix, and work for live use.

not here you can't. just because something is a direct conversion doesn't necessarily mean that's the price they go for in that country... mark IVs are about 2000+ new ($3000+), and while I'm not too well up on s/h mesa prices, just judging by the new price I imagine you'd be doing well to get one for much less than maybe 1200-1300.

Certainly the mark V combo is pushing 2500 new here. :(
