To anyone who's owned both pickups, please give comparative feedback. Also, if you own either, let me know what you think about the pickup. I'm trying to decide between GFS's calibrated Lil Killer Black Rails set or DragonFire Black Rails pickups.

I got the Lil Punchers (tele version of lil killers) in my tele and really like them. They retain the character of a single coil (attack and cut) while gaining some of that of a humbucker (more girth and hum-canceling). I am really happy with them and they are worth the price I paid ($50 for a bridge/neck set).

Good to know. Thanks! What did your set come with?

It's ok. I'm interested specifically in the Black Rails from DragonFire, but I'd love to hear about their other pickups as well.

I ordered mine as a set, and the set includes a bridge and a neck p-up. The strat set includes p-ups for all 3 positions.

I have dragonfires in my HSH Strat. Don't like them at all. Theres a **** ton of gain but there's no character, they're just buzzy and lifeless.

I was wondering if it came with springs, screws, extra wire, etc. or not. Considering how inexpensive the set is though, I wouldn't complain otherwise.

So they're lifeless? I'm considering wiring my Strat HSS sized but really have it HSHH. By this I mean have the Hot Rail as the bridge, a bluesy warm single coil as the secondary bridge, and the other two hotrails as the mid and neck pickups. I'd also wire the hot rails for split coil. Has anyone done split coil with the hot rails? How does it sound?

If you could upload clean unprocessed sound clips of the pickups, it'd make me a happy panda.

EDIT: Also, what pots do you use, and what's the rating of your cap, if you have one installed?

I'll try to get some clips later when I get home. I'm not sure the specs. It was a prewired pickguard from them that came with a guitar I got in a trade.

Mmk. Thanks!

Mmk. I was gonna order some screws and springs from them separately, but I guess that'd be redundant, assuming they include the diagram, screws, and springs in all their sets.

Thanks very much! It's hard to discern the actual sound of the pickups, given they lossy compression and such and my poor computer speakers, but it was well enough to steer me away. I don't expect the GFS pickups to be tone heaven, but I'm hopeful they're better than the DragonFire Black Rails. I intend on getting a true crisp clear overwound single coil eventually. Something really bluesy to drop in as my secondary bridge pickup.

What kind of sound are you looking for?

An alternative you could also consider are Iron Gear pickups... their quite reasonably priced.

I've actually already considered them. But they're way across the pond! While I'm buying the GFS set now, that doesn't mean I'll never buy anything else again. So in the future I may get some. They looked well enough, and had good reviews. Their sound clips were alright but my sound system isn't that great, either.

EDIT: Overall I'm looking for something different. Something heavy. But something with lots of treble. I love treble. And I love mids. But not as much as treble. Bass can back the **** up outta muh face. Right now most of all I'm just looking for something hot I can drop in a single coil slot. I really really really really prefer the clarity of a single coil, but I'm forcing myself to expand my interests and playing style. I'm buying 500k push pull pots to go with the GFS set, along with a black HSS pickguard. I'm also buying a mini toggle switch, and eventually, a warm fat single coil pickup. The GFS set is going in the neck, middle, and position closest to the bridge, while the single coil pickup I eventually get will go in the secondary bridge position. I'm really partial to single coils, and I'm super partial to the bridge position. I think this layout will be the best possible. I dunno if I want to wire the switch to turn the single coil on, or wire the switch to choose between which pickup is selected at the first position on the 5way selector. I've really been thinking this through :P.

These sound pretty good to me. Exactly what I'm going for, cleanwise.

That sounds quite muddy... and somewhat overdriven for a clean tone.

I'd always recommend trying out Bare Knuckle Pickups... you'll never go back to the big 3 pickup makers after trying out a BKP. Their singles throw out quite a creamy sound.

Maybe I'm just desensitized. I've been playing a stock MIM Strat for years. It's one of the 60th anniversary models, except it doesn't even have the Tex-Mex pickups.

Link me to what a pickup should sound like in your opinion :3.

I have been modifying my strats for about 8 years and have used almost every Fender sold strat pup as well currently using the Dragon Fire Texas Blues. I used these to replace my Texas Specials, as they were a bit mid range heavy and tended to be muddy. I prefer these for SRV tone. That said, I am also looking at the exact same config you are and trying to select between the exact same pickups. The DFTBs were constructed as well as anything I have ever used from Fender.

I own the DF Hot Rail ( 12.2k ohms) and the GFS "Lil Killer (15k ohms). Both were great. DF Hot Rail had some BL-250, YJM, Chopper and some PAF tonal tendencies The GFS "Lil Killer was good in the middle position of 80's Kramer.

Stop bumping this shit..

Why do you sound so negative about these pick ups. I heard samples of your playing ... and that in it self .... nullifies your negativity about these pick ups

It is not the pickups, it is the fact you keep bumping threads that are 3+ yrs old.

And obviously you dont come here often, Greeny is a very knowledgable person on these forums.
And for what it is worth the few DF pickups I have tried sucked so.......
