I am looking to start playing some jazz covers but am unsure of where to start. The main core would be a female vocalist, and then me on guitar so I would prefer the songs be guitar based or chordal piano. We have access to drummers and bassists and such, but I feel it would be easier to work everything out between the two of us. If I can add anything to be more specific I will.

We'd like to play small open mics and small low key bars at first so subtle pieces would be the best.

So I've wanted to become more involved in jazz music for years now and only VERY slowly have I managed to find jazz that engages me (although the few pieces that I've found that do I really LOVE). So far, I can sum up my appreciation of jazz in three albums:

Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz To Come"
Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch"
Charles Mingus' "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady"

Where to from here?

Oh shit, new poster in this bustling place.

I'm taking Jazz guitar next semester. I'm becoming more interested in setting a foundation for myself. What are good places to start with a focus on guitar? I already listen to some Maynard Ferguson, Count Basie, and a couple others. I dig Bebop but don't know where guitar fits into Jazz. I guess I'm looking for smoother Jazz to start out with.

listen and revel in the joys he gave you or wallow in the despair of knowing you discovered his greatness mere days too late.

I was just trying to find guitar based Jazz so I could learn more about what it sounds like.

Thanks a lot.

I mean that sincerely and sarcastically because that's really shitty that he died.

he was 91. no need to get beat up about it. But god DAMN he could lead a session. DAMN. Literally changed the way I play, and I preach that dude EVERYWHERE when i can now. Deserves more than just one guy on a guitar site gushing about him posthumously.

Did the album of the month about him a year ago (that i see is still up

I hate discovering people only after they die. I bought an album after listening to more on Youtube. Really enjoying it since this is the sound I was looking for kind of.

I've been looking for people with that sort of tone but maybe more...average? I'd like to hear stuff with some standard comping a little soloing. Standard Jazz guitar stuff.

Hey,

im looking for an jazz/blues artist who would employ the hammond B3, and the electric guitar. Something similar in sound to Muddy Waters "Bottom of the Sea".

As a fan of the jazz fusion found in mathcore and tech death artists such as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Death, Cryptopsy, Pestilence, what artists would you suggest to wean me on to full blown jazz?

Hey guys, I'm new. I've been using ultimate guitar for a while. I just never used the forums. Does anyone here, like Gary Moore? He's my absolute favorite, and hardly any of my friends know about him, or listen to him.

If you've never heard of him, here's one of his best performances.

Hey folks, I need some advice about a genre I'd like to explore. I really don't know if it's Rock, some kind of progressive or blues, so I hope you can help me.

It's a song from the endcredits in Californication and I couldn't figure out, what band or song it is. So basically I'm looking for the band AND the genre ;D

Here's what I'm talking about:
