Great article. It clearly makes sense to keep on 'practicing' once the 21-day 'training' has lapsed. Just like anything, as time passes. You loose 'your touch' so to speak.

I used Rocksmith2014 to learn from a slow speed and applied this theory.
I can easily play some difficult songs by memory and can pick some even more difficult songs by looking at the guitar.

I'm gunna try this out and keep you updated on my progress throughout my 21 days. I'll keep a log, and I'll update every few days as not to spam too much xD

Song I'll be using: Paul Gilbert - Curse of Castle Dragon
Reason: This song is one of the few songs that emphasises certain techniques (String Skipping, Alternate Picking, Ecomony Picking) that I am not as good as I like to think I am at using.

I still haven't learnt the fastest part of the song, but it's rather simple to play. I'll be learning at as soon as I have gone to the toilet x)

Edits:
Day 1 - Just started and can play this song perfectly at 90 bpm. I could probably do it a bit faster too, but I find struggling when practicing doesn't help too much so I'll stick with 90 for now. Played through it about 5 times now and am gunna use the burst method and put it up by 10 bpm then play and go back down again. Will be back in a few days to update again. Keep rocking guys!

I know this was asked a while ago but I'm still gonna reply. The metronome keeps the beat steady which is extremely hard for us to do at slow tempos. To show what I mean to keep the beat I'm using the example of a waltz. In a waltz you have large beats and in between each one there are two little beats so it sounds like 123,123,123 (or Ooo,Ooo,Ooo to show emphasis) with the 1 being the strongest. to get this you could put on a metronome on a slowish tempo (about 58) and say 1,2,3 making sure to keep 1 on the click and maybe whispering the 2&3 to feel the beat pattern. This shows you how to keep a beat and the goal would be to make sure everything is even and steady. Now if you were trying to learn a song and you had to always play on the 2&3 you would be able to play with the metronome and know exactly where the 2&3 fall instead of guessing.

As for your specific song. That rhythm is pretty complicated. I'm pretty sure it's a polyrhythm which is much harder to count. It's like having four even beats and then sticking superimposing three even beats on top of that having them both start the 1 at the same time. I would advise working on a more rhythmically straight song with a metronome to get used to it before moving on to polyrhythms.

I'm really fond of the idea of the 21 day method but I have huge troubles with how to apply the metronome to my practice. When playing scales, or songs in 4/4 with one strum per beat it's easy peasy to use a metronome but with more advanced stuff(Lead stuff, finger-picked stuff, solos, riffs and so forth. Looking to play Fade to black rythmn guitar up to speed atm) i'm completly lost, how to apply the metrome?

I think I get the general idea that if a song is in 4/4 for instance then you play whatevers in a the bar in four beats on the metronome then move on and play whateverr is in the next bar in four beats etc. Am I wrong with that idea?
But even if the above idea would be right I still can't make sense of it; how to you know what's in a bar? How to know what to play within 4 clicks on the metronome or 6 clicks and so forth.

After reading your reply to Metalman89 and been looking into a bunch of post about using the metronome but I really can't get the hang of if. Maybe I'm just stupid but something doesn't click. Oboe or anyone else viewing this post pls share your thoughts to us aspiring guitarists!

I've read the entire topic, i don't know if someone is still trying this method (90% that started did not post any feedback about the method) or even follow this topic but i want give my contribute.
I started this 1 week ago, i've applied this method of practice to every thing but i chose 2 songs:

- Technical Difficulties by Racer X
- Wasted Years by Iron Maiden

i've spent the fist 2 days to learn the songs then i started to use the metronome:

- Technical difficulties: i practice this with guitar pro, setting a costant speed at 40 bpm. I pratice just the part of the song before the breakdown (the riff before the solo part). I think repeating smaller part more often can optimize the learning process (practice the whole song would be too dispersive).
- i practice this with a backing track slowed down to 0.61% of the original speed.
(i decided to play the song at that speed even if is the verse is very easy because i want to bring the whole song to the maximum speed i can do the solo, which is the most difficult part)

A little background of me: i'm selftaught, i play guitar for 12 years now, i had a band and i did some gigs, but in the last 2 years i decided to be serious about practicing, tried various methods but never worked. I'm interested in every feedback you could give me and i will keep you informed about my progress.
My dream is to be able to play the song of my guitar idols and the bands i like, so speed is necessary. I wonder if someone ever reached an advaced level using this method.

My impression so far (almost 18 days):

The improvement was not so relevant. I can play cleanly at the starting speed but like i was already doing as soon as i learned the tab. The speed at i wasn't able to play before is still unreachable (meaning that there was a speed that i could play 3 or 4 notes before everything fall down).
Overall I think it is a good method for beginners, but i don't feel it is life changing for most advanced guitar player (until now).
However there are some things to consider:

- technical difficulties is very difficult (really? ), so much patience is needed with this song. Wasted years is much easier, but if you play the original solo, there's a part in the solo that is actually very difficult.

- due to social life and work, i HAD to skip 4 day in a row (it was painful), i tried to play at night (2 a.m.) but it wasn't sustainable.

- i've changed guitar and string gauge after a week i started, so maybe i need more time to adapt to the new guitar?

Anyway i think everyone should try this, playing with clarity can be only beneficial.
I keep doing the challenge for maximum 30 days the i will rise a little bit the metronome and start a new 21 days.

Sounds really intriguing. So theoretically then this would work on all aspects of guitar playing. I.E. If I want to learn major scales on the entire neck if I play them for 21 days straight I will know them? Of course though, there are always more exceptions. In what intervals do I practice? 5 minute periods 3 times daily? 15 minutes? Until I get tired?

Also, let's say I practice 3-4 hours daily (usually does happen) could I theoretically work on two-three skills at once? Maybe do scales for fifteen minutes then move toe arpeggios, then move to note recognition and repeat this process three times?

It's not really going to work with stuff like scales because scales aren't a finite thing, they're a compositional tool - they're a means to an end, not the end itself.

The idea only really works when applied to a piece of music, you know whether or not its worked because you'll either be able to play the piece or you won't. In short it should work as an approach for learning a song, it doesn't work when applied to assimilating knowledge.
