Couldn't seem to find this thread on the forums. I as planning on undertaking a kit build but can't really decide between a Jem, SG or other shape.

Right now I'm looking at an Ed Roman No. 2 kit.
http://www.edroman.com/parts/kit_guitar_2p.html

A few things:
1. Ask them to route it for a Gotoh Floyd Rose? I'm convinced I can hande one.
2. Basswood body...?
3.

Has anyone ever bought any of these kits before, how's the overall quality?

Ed Roman is a fraud and is terrible. Don't buy anything from him.

ESP Horizon NT-7 (SD Full Shreds)
UA Apollo Twin Duo
Peavey Revalver 4

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

That sucks. I was kinda looking forward to a cheap but okay quality kit.

Anybody ever buy one / suggestions for another kit(Please, No Saga)?

BYOGuitar. I must sound like I'm advertising for them :/ I'm not - I bought a kit and it was great quality and great value. Check them out. They're also great as they have a few less common kit designs so they're a little more quirky in that way. They are US-based but I'm assuming if you're looking at Ed Roman kits that's not a problem.

I could offer more alternatives if you have a specific style in mind.

I bought from BYOGuitar as well. Only good things to say - some of the hardware was actually useable too, but the wood was great, nothing broken or warped. It's my main player now.

I've checked out BYOGuitar before, the closest the have to a PRS shape seems to be a Double cut LP Jr. and the Jem is with a pickguard.

Any international suggestions? Anything that ships to either India, Poland or Germany.

How are the electronics on BYOG kits?

The JEM is routed so you can use it with or without a pickguard. Check the additional photos.

The BYOGuitar kit shapes change regularly, the kit I built is based on a Custom 22 PRS, you might just have to wait til the next shipment comes in or something.

I was eyeballing the Flying V kit on the Ed Roman site. Looks to be the closest thing cosmetically to a 67 Gibby V--in terms of kits, that is.

HOWEVER:
1) Ed Roman is dead (and has been for about 2 months now), so even though the site is still live, is the business even running still?
2) The kit is basswood, as opposed to mahogany (doesn't bother me too much, since I'm not a total snob when it comes to wood. I mean, I have a plywood Squier that still rocks despite its construction.(

I've heard mixed things about Roman. He seemed knowledgeable, but we all know that 1) his outspoken opinions often made an ass of him, and 2) he seemed to be very much the car-salesman type; you know, hype his own products to make more profits.

From many sources (including Facebook, Guitar World, etc, etc.) I gathered that he had a massive heart attack and kicked the bucket about a week before Christmas.

I guess they changed the BYO kit, because the PRS style is gone, and in its place something that looks like the bastard love child between a Custom 22 and a Schecter C-1.

I'd love to see pics of that PRS-style build

To be 100% honest, I didnt get around to properly finishing it... but this is the link to it.

https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1451459

You can see what I started with - the only real work outside the staining and painting and whatnot was a LITTLE fretwork - but if you're prepared for that... theyre pretty high quality kits. The guitar is my main player right now - all I did was put some dimarzios and grovers in it, but I didnt have to do any work on the neck pocket or neck, or anything like that.

Dude, that guitar is sweet. I wish I could get my hands on something like that. I might just find a decent neck and cut a body into a DC LP Special shape from scratch and do a Mira build.

Ed has passed away. I knew him well and considered him a friend. His daughter Lyndsey now owns the shop and Scott is still head of sales (great guy).

If you watch American Restorations Ed's shop just did a Mosrite for Rick Dale's son.

Great shop and Scott is a very nice and well respected guy.
