This is my entry for the 2012 build challenge 'Unlimited' category. I didn't get a picture with the entry form before today though, so I can withdraw if anyone has issues with me entering.

Superstrat (Flat) 24
Slightly slanted Superstrat style body:
One-piece mahogany with a 5mm flamed maple cap (stain to be decided)
Final thickness of ~45mm

Thin U-shaped neck:
One piece sapele neck with a 11-13° scarfed reverse headstock
Set-neck construction

Ebony fingerboard:
25.5" scale and 24 jumbo frets
12" fingerboard radius
Abalone inlays (design to be decided)
Purfing of abalone, 2-ply thin (white-black) and single thick white plastic
Slanted end towards fret 24 for an angled pickup

Hardware and electrics:
Chrome Floyd Rose Special
All other hardware chrome
IronGear Dirty Torque bridge humbucker and Pig Iron neck single coil
BYOC Confidence Boost in the guitar
Controls to be decided (likely vol/vol/tone with push-pulls for killswitch and booster)

Plan:

Raw materials:

Gluing up:

Body shape rough routed (complete with masking tape adhesive marks):

Form with everthing that I have so far:

Next step:
Work the body to ~45mm thickness from ~55mm and sand the tooling marks out.

You have some really nice ideas for the construction of the guitar, but why only have an FR Special?

Honestly? The Special is less than half the price of an OFR, and this will be my first build with a Floyd Rose. I'm not really one for vibrato tricks, so I just need it to hold tune

Love the idea with the controls. I've been looking into doing something similar with a guitar I've been doing up. Best of luck with the build.

Thanks, man. I want the killswitch and booster control in there, but I don't want mini switches everywhere!

Updates....

Yesterday:

Today:

I've measured and marked the neck for 27 frets, because I left too much wood at the tenon end - fortunate, 'eh? The sides and top of the neck and headstock are planed and ready for work. I'm hoping to get ears glued onto the headstock tomorrow, then I'll plane it further on Thursday and work on a flamed maple headstock faceplate. I'm basically not touching the body until I've got the neck heel ready for pocket routing.

Slow and steady wins the race.

The ears are glued up and clamped on, and will be ready to plane back tomorrow.

The scope of this build has changed slightly:
TOM bridge and tailpiece instead of a Floyd,
3-way switch,
All passive.

I want to keep it simple and get another project under my belt.

Here's some progress from this weekend:

Truss rod routed,
Neck cut out,
Headstock very rough cut,
Pickups cavities routed,
Control holes drilled and recessed,
Control cavity routed,
Body binding installed.

Yay! It lives. It's certainly been an excellent weekend for it. Looking good.

I think I really like the recessed controls and I've been toying with doing it on my current build. But there's a part of me that thinks it's just another thing to (potentially) stuff up. :P I'm also not entirely sure how I'd approach it.

Looking good so far. Is that a Razer? I used to have one of those, but then it broke so I got a TT Theron instead.

It does, just about! I don't know how other people do it, but I've been using a cove cutter with the bearing removed, then just sanding the edges:

Thanks, man. It's a Razer Imperator 2012 - great mouse when it works, but it has some annoying glitches sometimes, which just kill it for me :\ Buyer's remorse.

I also really like the recessed controls! This is shaping up to be quite tasty! Keep up the good work. I only wish I had the time to do a build from scratch, and the money for the tools of course, and the space, and the money for materials. God dam it, i need a bigger house and more money haha.

Thank you!

You're thinking way too big - you need to attack your problem in bitesize portions. Prioritise tools, then buy them as and when you come to that part of your build. That way, enough time will have passed to justify spending more money. Also, bear in mind that there are literally no negatives to buying tools - they're infinitely useful and functional. Following this advise and not only will you have a hoard of tools before you know it, but people will actively encourage you into a workspace and they'll support your creative endeavours.

The weather was awful this weekend and I had some social plans, so no progress. I've got a week off work from the 20th though, which will give me ample time to kick this and the star. I also really want to try a subtle dragonburst on this one, if that's possible - I'm thinking more blue than green, then blue on the rear.

If you want to do the floyd for tuning just do what they do for the mick Thompson ibanez

Anyone who wants to post a survey should ask a mod first and post it in its own thread. That's just common courtesy.

From this weekend:

Lots of sanding, belly carve, and fret access carve.

Edit: I need to choose a design for the inlays and get the method for doing the purfing straight in my head.

That is a good looking body.
Any reason why you rout the pickups before routing the neck pocket? I did it like that a couple times on my first few builds. It caused so much more trouble, becasue then you have to align the neck to the routs, instead of the other way around.

Thanks, buddy. That's pretty much where I am - I've done it as a bit of an experiment, but I decided last night that the time you save isn't worth it. I also want to focus on the necks earlier than I have done in the past.

I routed for the binding around the headkstock today. I need to get some 1.52mm binding to go around it, so that'll have to wait for a week or so.
