Hey guys, my friend bought a 6 string Ibanez bass, and he would like to have a low F# string instead of having a high C to match my 8 string guitar. The problem is, he doesn't know what strings he needs to do that. If you got any suggestions, you would be really nice to leave them here. Thanks a lot!

It's a little on the pricy side at just over $60, but I personally use Circle K Strings' ".166 6 String 34 to 35 Scale Length Traditional" set for that tuning

the gauges are:
.166 .124 .094 .073 .055 .041

If that price point doesn't suit you you could always just buy your regular set in a 5 string version and pick up a single string from that company for around $25

Those big heavy strings hardly ever wear out so you should be all set for a while just buying that one string. and replacing the rest as normal

Will he need to change his tuners for bigger ones or it should fit in?

he won't need to change his tuners, but he will need to get his nut refitted for the heavier strings.

Was looking into having my 5's modified at the Nut for the Sub Contra Bass and an extended range Bass.

I was hearing Brass Nut quotes at $200.

Perhaps next year.

Just so you know, that low F# is very very low and not that usable......

It's almost on the edge of human hearing spectrum....

You should get it properly set up though, other wise it's gonna be floppy regardless of the string gauge. I would use a .175 gauge personally for the low F.

Also, proper EQ'ing will help, if you add way too much low it's just gonna sound like a big wet fart.

It's just as useable as any other pitch.

Really? Because my brothers friend got a 7 string bass about a year ago, and the low F# sounds very unclear and 'farty'....

Idk, maybe just his pickups suck...

probably this. Obscura's bassist uses a 7 with flats, and you can hear it alright. seems to all be in the Eq and pickups.

CJ what sort of amplification do you use?

500w 1x15 portaflex is the rig I usually use for that setup

I use Circle K .166 for low F#. Ibanezes have a shorter scale length, though, so you might want to go a size or two up.

Low F# is completely useable. Those who say otherwise haven't tried it themselves.

Just make sure your amp/speakers will handle it, you'll need a hefty speaker and plenty of watts.

I've never actually came across that make before. Does it handle it ok?

The make is Ampeg, Portaflex is the model. it handles it fine

Check out Nakedstrings, you can choose the gauge of strings you want.
