Yes a dimarzio super distortion will work fine for metal music. But they are a pickup that was designed in the 1970's so be aware that they will have an older style metal tone to them.

If you like modern metal the Dimarzio Crunch Lab would be a better pickup to look at.

Hell, yes you can play metal on a guitar loaded with DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups! That pickup was the original "hot aftermarket guitar pickup, and a lot of people still use them:

http://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/humbuckers/high-power/super-distortion

It hasn't been around for more than thirty years for nothing.

If you're into Iron Madien, Dave Murray uses a Super Distortion in his Signature Strat:

The Dimarzio SD is an awesome bridge pickup. However, go with something more mellow in the neck, like a Paf Pro.

Cool little amp!

The Super Distortions are cool but they aren't that common tight metal pickup. They have a sizzle in the top end while the bass is quite fat sounding. Very compressed pickup. Reminds me of KISS.

English isn't his first language so obviously he didn't get the correlation.

I play alot of maiden and i do fine with Super Distortion. The only thing i would suggest would be not to coil tap it in the bridge position (doesnt sound too great!)

It sounds horrible... THE WHOLE F%$^'N VIDEO! Anyway OT: Super Distortion is a great pick up, perfect for 80's metal.

Agreed, that vid sounds bad throughout. This is what the SuperD sounds closest like to me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-00x6lI0D4

That's the basic tone of the SuperD. It is great for classic rock, 80's metal, hard rock & shred. For modern metal the Crunch Lab won't disappoint, the SuperD will need an EQ pedal in between the guitar & amp(sim) to tighten up the low end.

Here is what the Crunch Lab sounds like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw8xfJmsHp8

The custom seems to have more highs, I sense more fullness too. But somehow I prefer the crunch lab.
