Hey!

I'm looking for a tube amp for practise with drums, and eventually gigs.
I've been told to look into getting a tube amp. I mostly play pop-punk / alternative rock / garage rock type stuff. So it needs to have good distortion and not be too dark sounding! I'll be going for a combo and don't want to spend too much!

Only things I've seen so far that interest me are; The Peavy Valveking 112 combo, and the Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40W combo

Anyone have any experience with these amps? or anyone got any good suggestions for an amp I might like?

Thanks!

Really, I'm trying not to go too much over 500, but I can be a little flexible.

I would avoid eBay. Lots of up-charging and the shipping can be a little steep. Fender Blues Jr. Would be good, probably under $300.

Anyone got any experience with the Valveking 112?

The VK is a diecent first tube amp. The cleans are pretty diecent and it has a diecent amount of gain on tap. The speaker Isn't the best, so maybe an upgrade would be inorder if you buy it.

There are lots of mods you can do to them to make them much better than they are stock.

kinda thinking between the Valveking and the DSL401 atm

The DSL401 slays the VK 1x12.

Deff look in to the DSL, they are really nice amps and they sound good too. I have had my DSL 100 for a few months and it is a great head.

Yep. We have all the mod cons over here

Don't know how it is overseas, but in the UK CL is a bit of a pain in the arse as you have to use the one nearest you, you can't just search the whole site for what you're after. I guess that's OK if you're in one of the bigger cities, but for me it means I have to search for everything a few times to cover everywhere I could collect from

TS - if you're going used, it can also be worth checking sites list Cash Converter/Generator to see if they have what you're looking for. No personal experience, but I've heard of people finding good deals there.

traynor ycv50b on thomann

gak had/has some deals on genz benz stuff, but a lot of it has gone already. the 100 watt el diablo combo still seems to be available, though, at £550. might be too modern-voiced for what you want, though.

fwiw, the blackstar isn't all-tube, and the boost in the vk is solid state (though it can be turned off, which is something). I haven't tried the blackstar (it may sound great), but it's worth bearing in mind. I think you can do better than the VK at your budget (or the HRD or dsl401, but that might be more verging into personal opinion).

I saw in a couple of pictures that on Bucketheads Les Paul (only some pictures) that his neck pickup is painted in white. Can anyone explain to me why he would do this, and if there are any pros and cons.

The ValveKing is a nice amp from what I remember. My dad had one a few years ago and it sounded really nice, but I remember being surprised that it didn't have more gain. I have no experience with that Blackstar.

I would suggest seeing if you can find a used Egnater Rebel 30. I got one a few months ago and it's potentially my favorite amp that I've played up to this point. You can get so many different sounds! Not too expensive, either. I got mine used in NYC for $500 and change (can't remember the exact price).

I owned a ValveKing for a while. Decent amp, not great. I honestly wouldn't even consider it if you can get a DSL though.

There's a used one on Ebay I might be able to look at because it's only 350£

Can I get quite a ballsy, but not too dark pop punk or alternative rock sound from it?

Carvin X100b, Ampeg GVT15h, Jet City JCA20h, Orange Tiny Terror, there are alot of budget priced tube heads out there, why is there only like 3 amps listed? this is ridiculous. You can find any of these above amps for around the same prices if you look hard enough. I would personally go for the Marshalls though but thats going to be nearly impossible for you to find to be honest.

Those are good budget heads, but TS is looking for a combo. Guess you should read a little better

And the fact he is in the UK is why the Laney and Marshall are suggested, they are cheaper there than what alot of others amps are.

also don't discount thomann- that traynor ycv50b is just a really good deal at that price. it's better than a heck of a lot of things at that price *used*. I'd take one over a dsl401. plus you get a 3 year warranty- which i wouldn't pay extra for, but when you're getting it for nothing, why not?

there's not much point in going used if you can get better things new, lol.

I think the VK has a lot more "balls" on tap. The DSL401 has superior tone IMO, but not necessarily for what you want to do. It's a pretty far cry from the head versions, which are ironically excellent amps for what you want.

It's hard for me to say, because I really wouldn't recommend either.

I guess I'll just say, look for a used Peavey XXX combo. Pop punk is kind of a confusing genre. It doesn't sound apparently "heavy", but it often utilizes a very modern tone achieved by the same amps that are considered "heavy" or "metal". That is neither the VK's or the 401's forte by a long shot.

Actually.. that does look pretty cool. I found a guy doing covers with it, but he'd using pedals for distortion. How does it sound with just built in gain?

Yeah I get you. I've not heard of the Peavy xxx combo, I'll check it out.

I like the look of the Peavy XXX a lot.

The only bad thing about this is that there is now more to take into consideration.

The Peavy XXX
Traynor YCV50B
Valveking
and the DSL401

These are all options.

I fear that the Peavy Valveking will be a bit too dark sounding for the stuff I want.
and I feat that the Marshall might not have enough kick, kind of.

The XXX looks pretty nice tbh, and I saw a guy covering Billy Talent with the Traynor, and I like Billy Talent. But he was using a pedal, I think.

i've tried the 40 watt version, which is similar, but has 6L6 power tubes (so probably a slightly more fendery tone; the 50 is meant to be a bit more marshally) and a worse speaker. I thought the built-in overdrive channel was pretty good. it's not a 6505, but it'd do classic to hard rock no bother, i'd have said. an overdrive boost (e.g. the harley benton vintage overdrive which thomann sells for 29 euro, which is a rebadged joyo, is a tubescreamer clone) would help boost the onboard distortion to heavier levels, too.
