Hey guys, I'll just use the sticky to explain my situation:

Budget? - If it's a combo, I'd say about $1,000 tops. A head, maybe $800 or so.

Genres? - It's for a HUGE SOUNDING Grunge/Hard Rock/Metal band. I want that Fat British Tube tone.

New or Used? - I'm cool with Used. New obviously preferred, but used is totally cool.

Home or Gig? - This will be for gigging, hence lightweight is a BIG preference. I would just saddle up and get my dream amp, a Bogner Shiva 2x12, or not have sold my Splawn Pro Stock head if weight wasn't an issue. I need this to be portable to some degree so that I don't kill myself transporting this via the subway (Yes, the subway) for gigs.

Closest City? - NYC for the win! I'm in Brooklyn, and would prefer to find something in Manhattan, Queens or Brooklyn.

Current Gear? - I'm using a 2010 PRS CU24 with HFS and Vintage Bass PUps. Not much in the way of pedals, I'm really looking for that plug-in-and-go vibe. Willing to hear suggestions here. If I were getting a head, I would be relying on venues to have their own cabs to go with it. I have a POD to practice at home (NYC apts don't allow for many other options!).

So yeah, I've considered a Tiny Terror, and a few other small heads, but none have that super awesome thick, huge, and BALLSY tone that I want. I am under the impression that it doesn't really exist without 4 power tubes rocking your face, but I want to be proven wrong! Give me a Bogner Shiva type sound in a portable combo/head!

Thanks for any help in advance guys.

Orange Dark Terror (15 watts)
Orange Dual Terror (this has 30 watts of headroom )
Diamond Asassin (18 watts)
Marshall DSL15h (15 watts)
Krank 1980Jr (20 or 50 watt heads)

And I would suggest a 1x12 orange PPc, 1x12 recto cab, Krank 1x12. Deff go used if you can.

^ just about all of my dream amps are on your craigslist.

Now having searched for just about the same thing for the past year, I've found the following work best:

Marshall DSL401 or DSL50
JCM900 SL-X or Mk III
Egnater Renegade
Bogner Alchemist
Orange TH30 or Jim Root Terror (the Dark Terror lacks the EQ - just has a shape knob. on this particular amp it made it difficult to control)
Mesa Express 5:50
Peavey JSX head
Egnater Vengeance

the alchemist combo might be what you're looking for. or you could go all out and save the $500 more to get the Shiva.

I bet you want one cuz that's Jerry Cantrell's favorite.

Hey guys,

Thanks a lot for all of your suggestions. I'm thinking of trying out a Dual Terror myself in person, but from what I've heard via youtube demos (which is a poor way to judge an amp, I know), it doesn't sound as Fat and thick as I'm looking for.

Also, I want to stress again the importance of this being a highly portable amp. I'm going to be gigging around NYC and will be bringing it onto the SUBWAY, and not just throwing it in the trunk of my car. It needs to weigh under 30 pounds, so, in more realistic terms, I'm probably looking for a portable head as opposed to a combo.

Regardless, I really do appreciate the effort everyone here has given me, and thanks again.

i love my dual terror, its great at relatively low volumes (7 watts) at night, i can play and not bother anybody as long as the door is shut. i will sometimes run my timmy as a boost on the fat channel. that makes it a lot better IMO. a tube screamer may be better too, but i haven't tried mine on it in a long time.

the lower gain channel is also neat. takes pedals great.

and also so you know, a dual terror has a footswitch but you have to buy it seperate. i dont have/need one, but just as an FYI they are like $20, or you could make one for half of that.

Bumping someone else's thread because I'm looking for the same thing. Looking for a lightweight combo(preferably under 30 pounds) that I can cart around that'll sound good enough for a Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins kind of sound at gigs. Upper limit I'm looking to spend is around 600, although lower is preferred, and new or used, in the Boston area.

You can get fender Hotrod Deluxe 1x12 combos for $350+ on www.guitarcenter.com/used then you need a diecent OD pedals.

You can also look for a used Marshall JCM2000 DSL401, you won't need an OD pedal for any of the music your playing but you may want a delay/reverb/chorus pedal

Jet City JCA 2112rc/2212c 1x12 is also worth a look the 2112 is 1 channel and the 2212 is a 2 channel amp

I highly doubt you'll find a combo <30lbs in your budget

Make your own thread please. lordy88 created his thread back in November.

Eh, whatever. You guys bitch if people make duplicate threads, and you gripe if people use existing threads.

Edit: Nope. Wrong.

You should have bumped one of your own 'What Amp' threads from last year.

This thread has now been *reported*

My suggestion would be to grab the Orange Dual Terror and a Big Muff type of fuzz pedal. On the lower gain channel the pedal will give you a big wall of fuzz sound reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins.

DSL401. Quite small for a 40 Watt amp.
Charvel So-Cal (SH6TB/N). Joyo pxl pro.
Loop1=Crybaby from hell, Seymour Duncan 805 or Green Rhino, EQD Hoof. Loop 1 into ISP decimator II.
Loop 2 (FX loop)-Line6 M9. Loop 2 into mxr 10band. All into a Peavey Triple XXX 212, Ibanez IL15.

Looking over a lot of options I think that might be the lowest I can really get. Sucks, as it's really not lighter than the HRD I've got currently, but it is what it is. Appreciate the constructive feedback, guys.
