hi everyone, im having a problem with muting in sweeping, my downstrokes are perfect i use the meaty part above my pinky to mute, but my upstrokes are not doing so well. ive tried to use different methods like using my pinky, using my fretting hand. but still a bit noise is there.

Look at it like this. When you're sweep picking the bottom side of your fingers should always be muting the strings underneath them. The fleshy side of your wrist is going to be muting the strings on top of the one that your finger is already on.

So if your finger was on the 1st string, you want your wrist to be muting the 2nd-6th strings.

If your finger was on the 2nd string, then using the fleshy bottom side of your fingers you would mute the 1st string and using your wrist you would be muting the 3rd-6th strings.

TS, you should use left hand muting when descending. If the strings are still ringing then you just have to work on your muting technique. That's all there is to it.

Just to clear this up - you can't (unless you're somehow approaching the high strings upside down) I think dannydawiz just didn't fully read your post. Junior #1 and Zaph's posts have your answer.

Everyones correct. You use the fleshy part of your wrist to mute when your both descending and ascending. The only difference is that during downstrokes you tend to use more of the wrist to block the thicker strings and during upstrokes you tend to use more of the fretting hand to mute the thin strings.


The only time when your wrist shouldn't be resting on the strings is during a 6 string sweep in which case you would use your fretting hand to mute all the strings while on the 6th string.

It should always be a combination of both for the best muting results.
