Ok, so I know most of you probably despise country music, and in all fairness 99% of it is shit. You could argue that it's become more commercialized and processed than a lot of pop music these days. However, I did grow up with it, and so I do have a bit of a taste for it. (And no, Im not inbred or married to my cousin)

Although, I'm not really into the the whole cheesy hillbilly sounding country, or the more pop sounding country like taylor swift. What I really like are darker songs, like these:

Now maybe some of them aren't 'country', but they have a country influence it sounds like to me. Does anyone know of any artists or songs like these? I looked into southern metal, but I'm not really into screaming vocals.

I was going to put this thread in there, but I thought you had to pick a sub-forum. I looked again and realized you can just make a post in there

You're talking about Old Country. Serious respect.

Hank Williams: Move it on Over. Lonesome Whistle. Mind Your Own Business.
Johnny Cash: I Hung My Head. Long Black Veil. I'd Rather Die Young. Ghost Riders in the Sky. Devil's Right Hand. Folsom Prison Blues. Cocaine Blues.
Waylon Jennings: Don't Think Twice, It's Alright.
Creedence: Lodi.
Willie Nelson: Coward of the County. Whiskey River. The Gambler.
Merle Haggard: Silver Ghost. Mama Tried.
And since you posted a Marty Robbins song: Ballad of the Alamo, Ballad of Jesse James, Streets of Laredo.

That should get you started.

You might also dig some Robert Johnson, TS. He's the blues guitarist who supposedly sold his soul to the devil at The Crossroads: Me and the Devil Blues. Hellhound on My Trail. Crossroads.

I highly recommend The Pine Box Boys. Especially their older stuff. Most of their songs are about murder, heartbreak, and more murder.

Neil Young is not country, but I've always felt he has some similarities to it, and can be relatively dark for the genre he is in.

That's just what it seems like to me. I like the elements of country music, but I just can't bring myself to listen to the stuff on the radio. These are all really good suggestions.

Well first of all, "Hurt" is a ****ing Nine Inch Nails cover.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure the Bring Me Your Love album by City and Colour might be down your alley.
