What note is the bass playing? Find it on the guitar, now. Come back and tell us...

This is called ear training, TS.

I said find out what the BASS is playing... then find the same note on the guitar (assuming TS was a guitar player).

Well done. The tonic note or "home" of the song is E.

Now listen to the tonality of the song. Does it sound minor or major? Clue - improvise using E pentatonic. YOU can decide on which pentatonic to choose. Minor pentatonic or major pentatonic.

Which one sounds more correct?

Way to help someone asking a question everyone. Yay to you!

TS: mdc had it- if you want to do little jazzy fills...try using either the major or minor pentatonic

Going back to the OP, you say you want to add your own fills? Ok, so now you know the key, E minor, the scale to use, Em.

The chords, he is playing chordal stabs of Em. You'll be limited to voicings, cuz you lack theory.

It ends here. S'up to you to put the work in now.

and you learn what, exactly, by neglecting to process new information and doing as you see fit?

Yeah i get what your saying

good.

remember, improving is very, very simple. people just like to make it hard. there are three simple steps

1) learn new information
2) understand new information
3) apply new information

once you've done all three, that information has become a part of you, and in something like playing music, it's very easy to tell whether a person is learning, understanding and applying. on one hand, this is bad -- any deficiencies in your practicing will be noticeable in your playing...

...but it's good on the other hand, because it enables you to know when you're making progress.

just keep a disciplined attitude to learn, understand, and apply the right things, and don't stop -- you will see results this way.
