hello !
in the key of E
i improvised the next chords progression but i got no idea on what scale should i follow to make solos and melodies on it

Em , Dmaj , Amaj , Amaj , Cmaj , A5 ( Power chord ) , A#dim , Bmaj

Ok, your chord progression is a "bit" weird, but heres how I´ll work it:

There is no scale to use on a general or global manner to improvise over this particular chord progression, the best thing you can do is improvise each chord individually.

First of all I´ll try soloing using arpeggios, using the chord tones can help you solve this.

now you can use the modes as follows:

For the minor chord use aeolian or Dorian mode
for the Maj7 chords use the Lydian mode, in this case you should do:
D Lydian, A Lydian, C Lydian and B Lydian, use it on the A5 al well
For th diminished chord I´ll suggest a# Locrian

Nothing too complex here as long as you don't think too hard. The whole progression is in E minor, so ultimately soloing in E minor will get you through it.

However, there are some "out of key" notes. It seems that you are aware of which notes are out of key. A major is the borrowed IV chord from E major. You could play the E major scale over this chord, or you could just avoid the C in the E minor scale and use a C# instead. That'll get you through this chord.

As for the dim chord, this is a passing chord, so you'll want to focus on chord tones for now (A# C# E G). Just be aware of the next chord. A# will resolve up to B, E will resolve down to D# and G will resolve down to F#. If you really want a scale to play over the dim chord, use the HW diminished scale. You could also use the B major scale, since you're tonicizing the B major, but I would be careful with that.

And the B is just a V in E minor, so you'll want to use the E harmonic or melodic minor scale.

Can you hear any melodies in your head over that progression?

But yeah, the chord progression isn't that weird. Just use E minor but avoid C over A major chords. If you want a "safe" scale, use E minor pentatonic, it'll work over all of the chords pretty well.

But really, look at food1010's signature.

E blues scale over the whole thing. As long as you can phrase your lines in such a way that they kind of float over the chord changes, the wrong notes won't matter.

The above advice given requires an incredible ear to hear the chord tones over the non diatonic chords in that progression at an intuitive level.

My advice will enable you to play over this progression immediately, but heed the others for sure. That is a lot of work, dedicated hard work and wood shedding.

To add onto what mdc, over the Amaj i would use the e major pentatonic, so you'd be mixing the E minor pentatonic/blues and the Emaj pentatonic.

Over the A major E minor pentatonic works just fine, I think better than E maj pent. Really, don't change scales, just play E minor pentatonic/blues (they are the same scale, blues scale has one more note, flat fifth). It's a clear minor progression so I would use a minor scale.

But of course experiment with different sounds. Nothing wrong with using E major pentatonic over A major chord in this progression. Major scale over minor key just doesn't sound good IMO. Minor scale fits major but not the other way around (IMO of course).

that's a pretty important issue.

don't worry about scales. use your ear and chord tones.

I happen to find that minor fits major better then the other way around as well, but i was just letting TS know that it was possible (although i guess anything is possible anyway)
