I'll need to adjust the neck I assume. I want to be sure I have my info right, when adjustig the neck, you look from the head to the bridge correct? That orientates you for clockwise/counter clockwise correct? Counter clockwise will lessen the bowing of the neck, correct?

Thanks.

Your orientation is fine but clockwise tightens the rod, giving you less bow. You'll probably need to turn just a hair counterclockwise to lessen the tension from going down a gauge.

That's what I meant. Hair would be a quarter turn like suggested or less?

One gauge down probably won't even need that. Get the new strings on, give it a few hours to settle in, then go in eighth increments.
You may find that the rod doesn't need to be adjusted at all.

+1 on putting on the strings first. I've never ever had to touch a truss rod til I got my EC-1000, and I've used everything from 9-42 to 12-60. People tend to greatly exaggerate the adjustments you need to do on a guitar.

yeah. now i'm no guitar tech () but generally i turn the thing as little as it can turn and see what happens. Sometimes, as colin says, that's plenty.

I saw in a couple of pictures that on Bucketheads Les Paul (only some pictures) that his neck pickup is painted in white. Can anyone explain to me why he would do this, and if there are any pros and cons.

The guy wears a KFC Bucket and a white mask during performances, and you're interested in the color of his pickup covers?

yeah probably loosen them. no idea if it does any harm or not not to loosen, but it's normally better to play it safe. plus if you loosen them a string shouldn't snap and poke you.

you may want to replace the nut since it is slotted for much bigger strings. A .54 is much larger than a .46, you may get some string rattle/buzz at the nut.

^ good call EDIT: oh, no wait, he's going the other way. Unless the slot's way too big (would that even do anything?) he should be fine.

i'd also say- if you are loosening the strings, you sorta have to guess where to set the truss rod. You can't set it to have the neck exactly right when the strings are loosened because once you tighten them again that'll have more pull on the neck.

It can be a problem having too much space around the string, but it also could be just fine.

I just wanted to point out a possible problem TS may encounter since alot of people dont think about the little things

Metal locking nut. Not an issue, but good advice regardless.

Ok, that makes sense. JUst wanted to make sure it wasn't like setting the action and protecting the blades.
