hi. i know there's been a lot of these kinds of threads but im too lazy to go through all of them. I'm looking for a PURE tube amp with these characteristics/features:

1. not too big. I prefer a combo. if it's a head + cabinet, maybe a 2x12 cabinet. I'll be bringing it to small gigs and I dont have a roadie. a halfstack would be too big to carry around (although a halfstack is my dream)

2. capable of playing small gigs. maybe 40 watts and above.

3. my sound would mostly come from pedals so effects on the amp is not necessary. a good clean tone is needed

4. AS CHEAP AS POSSIBLE without sacrificing good clean tone

thank you for your time!

Check out Craigslist for a silverface Twin. They're around at reasonable prices. They are the clean machine. Powerful, too.

Could you give us some more info, like budget, style of playing, current gear, your location etc?

Then they torched an Apple Store and made a PowerPoint about their experiences.

A Twin will handle any pedal you give it. The 135 watt ones are very common and so powerful and clean that they are usually very reasonably priced. $650 will get you one if you look around, for sure. I have one and had to go through hoops to get it some tube breakup. I don't use pedals so it was an issue. If I were a pedal user, it would have been ideal in stock configuration.

There's a benefit to them, too. They have no printed circuit boards so they will always be fixable. Fedner sent me a schematic for free and that's all a tech needs. I have a friend with a ten year old amp that he loves but can't fix because the amp is no longer made and the PC boards are no longer available.

Peavey JSX combo would be great it has really nice cleans and has good crunch and lead tones also much better than a pedal will get you.

Also check out the Peavey Ultra combo this is the model before the XXX and JSX amps a very good amp.

depends on type of music and price range. small gigs? well you can use far less than 40 watts. but if you absolutely need 100% prestine cleans you want more wattage.

are you playing metal? not many people will recommend a clean tone and pedals like that.

are you micing it up? i know many career musicians who play with a 15 watt 1x12 on tour.

it all depends.

Can't go wrong with an Orange Rocker 30 combo if you can find one, if not maybe a tiny terror and a 2x12 like a Harley benton Vintage if you can get one in the US.

I've had problems with being heard playing in small gigs before. I just want to make sure that my next purchase would solve that problem and put my mind at ease. The small venues we play in usually don't have good sound systems, so my previous amp wasn't mic'd whenever we play. I'm not really a metal player so metal capabilities on the amp are not necessary. I'm looking for something loud enough without being mic'd for small gigs

ok. well a 2x12 will help projection then if you do not mic at all.

how cheap is as cheap as possible?

200? 400? 600? 800?

i see no reason why you would need anything more than 30-40 watts for smaller gigs even un-miced.

what type of amp did you use?

look into music man. i have a HD212 130w hybrid combo. the preamp is solid state, but the poweramp is tube. its definitely comparable to a twin, really nice cleans, and with the right OD it will scream

ask gumbi. he is the one who turned me on to music man. i think he has four or five.
