How do you know which ones are the good quality stuff and which are junk.....it's a gift for a guitar playing offspring and i'm not a geetar player....

Just stay away from anything with MG written on it. The Valvestate cabs are pretty shitty too. The rest are fine.

The Marshall 1960 is good, cheap and extremely common - you can find them on Craigslist or eBay pretty much any day of the week for $300-350.

thanx...there is a mid eighties unit locally and he wants 450-500 bux.....prices here are higher than the usa but not excessively....i'm kind of torn as the drivers are 26 years old,but it looks well taken care of........would you say that if it sounds good that it's a reasonable investment....i don't want to be replacing drivers any time soon ....i'm guessing that they will be british manufactured celestion g12's????

As they said, as long as it doesn't say MG or Valvestate, you cannot go wrong.

Personally, I would probably go the Mesa. I know you say he is fixated on Marshall and that makes sense for a youngin, but a Mesa cab would be equally brilliant
#9
the mesa is no longer in play, sigh, and i myself have a mesa bass 400+/ph610 ,so i hear ya.....where would words like valve state or mg be found....the little tag on the grille or elsewhere?....did marshall do asian stuff back then?....or was it all brit in the mid 80's?....

Not sure about Valvestates, but MG cabs are instantly recognizable because they are physically much smaller than a 4X12 should be. They're like little toys haha.

Well a 1960 or JCM 900 is not going to have any of the problems that the others have, so just hit up any of them man, you can't go to wrong. As long as everything is in working order of course

The JCM900 4x12 is a 1960.
