^ that's a good point. While I'd argue it's an oversimplification, the old "buy cheap buy twice" adage does apply to a certain extent. at least if you buy a good guitar you shouldn't ever have to buy a "better" model.

try a renegade too.

sam ash by me had some ass kicking midtowns for $999.

saw this yesterday. it was not easy to walk out without it.

Those midtowns are pretty cool. Not quite the same 335 vibe, but they do have their own kind of mojo going. And $999 is a very tempting price. I've tried to find one to compare to the 335 but nobody has one in stock around here. Did you play it in the store? Any chance you could give me a 10-second review? How was the weight? Was it more balanced since it's not a true semi-hollow? How did the neck feel? What did you think of the artificial fretboard?

it's a different animal than a 335 obviously but i liked it a lot.

for the price? awesome. couldn't find any of the gibson usa factory flaws everyone harps on. the thing was built perfectly. it needed a slight twist of the truss rod is about it to be set up the way i'd want it.

neck was 60s but not as thin as some i've played. the killer was the fretboard. it's richlite or whatever but it was dyed dark. it looked and felt like ebony.

i mean there's a reason these aren't $2K. there has to be. but i can't figure it out.

it came with 57 classics, which are about as good as gibson stock pups get imo. the only current gibson pups i don't mind are those and the bb1/bb2 combo.

I don't think I've ever played anything in black walnut. It's a great ice cream flavor, so I assume it works well for a strat too.

The slugs in the pickups for telecasters are from old winchester rifles, which is why they sound so country.

Cool. I'll have to check around some more and see if I can find one and give it a spin. I'm not sure I'd pay full price because a used 335 is just a few hundred more. But at $999 that's a different story...

without question i would get the Gibson. when you have extra cash coming in in a higher sum, go for it, because its harder to save up for a 335, than it would be $700 for a used SG std. the other stuff you can just fit in between the cracks.

Sounds like you want the 335. In my opinion if you get the guitars that can emulate the guitar you want you will be satisfied for a while. However, this will fade and your desire to have that guitar you wanted still exists. I had guitars that I wanted and was forced, due to financial reasons, to get rid of them. Now I am buying and trading guitars left and right to try and get those back. I am currently saving and working my way back. SO...long story short if you want the 335, get it. You know it is the guitar you are after, just go for it. You can save money later for the others, but this seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity.
