I need a guitar that's good for playing Metal, Rock, Punk music.
It has to be under £550($850)
I want something that will look appealing to people that don't play guitar, so no strat or tele type guitars

The Reverend Double Agent III (@$850 new) and the Richmond Guitars Canada Empire (@$480 new) both have humbuckers in the bridge and P90s in the neck- they will easily handle punk and rock. Metal might be a stretch.

The discontinued Godin Velocity is a HSS is still on shelves new for @$850, or used for $500, and could probably do all 3. The Godin Freeway is HSH and could do likewise. Alas, both are Superstrats.

Fernandes has models like the Ravelle and Dragonfly that could be great for metal & rock. Don't know how they'd handle punk.

Malden has the limited edition Bad Karma that has a pair of nice HBs with individual coil taps. Its sister, the Karma, basically only lacks the coil taps.

You could get a used Mira for that price though!

Pretty solid guitars, really light, the one i tried had quite a full neck profile, was good in the hands. Wasn't really my sort of thing but it was a good guitar!

The DBZ Royale and Imperial* are nice doublecuts with incredibly thin body & ergonomics, paired Seymour Duncans HBs and coil taps. Should do the task you ask, and are quite attractive. The new Explorer-like Hailfire SM is likewise equipped.

http://www.dbzguitars.com/guitars/browse-by-body-style

* they are essentially the same guitar, but the Royale has a smaller body.

If you prefer LP type guitars or anything else for that matter that's fine but if you're suggesting Strats and Teles are unappealing to everyone we probably can't help you until you get your head out of your ass..

I think what he's saying is that Teles and Strats are so common (ever notice how it's the most commonly used electric guitar that kid shows/movies use?) that there's probably a lot of people out there that are just tired of seeing them and don't think they're very special, not to mention that often times it's beginners that are seen with them, so they've become associated with beginners. Now, if it had a unique paint job that really drew the eye to it that might be different. Basically, the appreciation for them has been lost among some people.

I hope that's not what he's saying!

I can't say I'm a huge fan, but a "Tele" can be just as pretty as any other axe out there.*

Probably just get a used Gibson Studio. Iconic shape and name brand, suitable shape and style for all genres you listed, non-musicians don't know the difference between a Studio and a Custom. As long as it has Gibby on the headstock and trapezoid inlays you'll be pretty set as far as appeal goes.

I want to say something.
When I bought my Trad, I expected it to be a very good guitar, seeing as it's worth in the 2ks. I bought it during the christmas sales on MF, and I got it for 1599. I was a bit disappointed because the same deal had occured for the Standard the week before and I didn't jump on it.
I thought I'd have it and barely play it, just be happy I finally had an actual high-end guitar (not counting my MM Silhouette).
I've always aligned all my guitars on a rack, keeping only my more precious ones in hard cases, as I don't want to always have to open a case to take the guitar out and play. In the case of the Trad however, even though I have 9 guitars aligned on a rack next to me and ready to play, I always want to take the case, open it, attach the strap, tune it, and play. It's much longer, but it feels worth it.
Now that the honey moon period is over, this guitar is so effing amazing.

Grab a new (or used if you're willing to go used to lower your cost by a lot) LTD EC-1000. I bought a used one last week for $900 (these cost over $1200 new where I live) and I can't say enough good things about these. Mine was upgraded with DiMarzio Air Classic and Air Zone pickups and it's one of the best guitars I have ever played. I was upgrading from a 2006 Epiphone LP Custom with Gibson pickups and the difference is ridiculous. Much better build quality and such a good neck.
These come new with either EMGs or Seymour Duncans which are both perfectly suited for all rock and metal

What he said. The necks on these are really nice. The full on ESP's are also available on closeout for a bit more. The Eclipse can be had in Seattle for $1400 right now. Beautiful guitar.

These guitars are honestly incredible. I have not yet played a Gibson Les Paul that beats this LTD which says alot. Built in Korea but my god these with a pickup upgrade are a keeper for sure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F85OMppweI here's proof that it sounds great (atleast through a mesa :P). That is my exact guitar that the guitar player on the right is playing (this was recorded not too long before he sold me the guitar)

.....yeah the better top end prestige ones on eBay

I don't know what else that's as good or as cheap is out there at the moment that is also not a big standard style or as pretty to look at.

There was a Rasmus Guthrie Govan on the bay for about £500, that might be worth hunting for.
