1. How do I get better at strumming open strings quickly and in odd patterns such as in songs like Chelsea Smile by BMTH?

2. How do I become better at soloing? I'm familiar with techniques like tapping etc. Are there any other essential techniques to soloing?

Practice and more practice... and practice with a metronome and slowly building it up to whatever tempo you want to perform

^ Pretty much this. Keep playing the guitar regularly like the rest of us and eventually you'll get it.

The real key with odd patterns like that is making sure that you know it perfectly by ear without the guitar in your hand. If you know exactly what you should be aiming to sound like then playing off-time things becomes much easier.

Depends what you mean by "better" really. Again, the important thing is knowing what you want to sound like, once you know that then it's just a question of getting it on to the guitar. That's not exactly a trivial task but it's infinitely easier once you have a sound in mind.
R.I.P. My Signature. Lost to us in the great Signature Massacre of 2014.

^ Good point he brings up. Off time things are a pain in the ass if you don't have the patterns engraved into your brain.
