i like pennies though, they have maple leafs on them and they remind me of my childhood disappointments
#42
I like pennys too. Probably the copper is worth more than 1 cent I guess. Anyways, it's stupid to round down, it adds up.
#43
Thank God this finally happened. It costs more to make them than they are worth, it's about time they cancelled it.
#44
Probably never happen in the U.S.

It's 2013 and they haven't been able to make a dollar coin work yet. (The way to do it would be cease production of the paper dollar.. but that won't happen either.)

Hell, we still haven't even adopted the metric system..

I think the UK has the best coin/paper money divisions. You have 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2 in coins, and then you have £5, £10, £20 in notes (you can also get 50 and 100 pound notes I think, rarely see em though).

I like this idea.

I pay manly in cash as I'm unemployed and under 18 and such, and while some things would be rounded up ($1.03 = $1.05), some would still get rounded down ($1.02 = $1.00) which basically makes it all even out. I'm not sure if I would remove the nickel, however.

I kept all my change for a year... bought a MIM Telecaster with it. Primarily pennies.

I am a fan of the penny.
This ends now, eat the goddamn beans!

With Cash, it gets rounded down.

Yea, we'll see how ****ing long that lasts.Anyone who thinks that the businesses will willingly round down is ****ing stupid.

What the **** kind of supposedly well run, porgressive, forward thinking cuntry dosen't have enough denomination of currancy to give proper change.

I guess it's just one more log on my political hate fire.
I am not accountable for this, okay.

We have the exact same except for two things (which are better). Our $50 and $100 bills are more common, easier to pay rent with a couple of hundreds vs a shitload of 20's, IMO. And the second is: our coins are .25, not .20. So you need 4 quarters for a dollar. Makes more sense to me.

So if I'm a smart retailer do I not jack my prices by the couple cents per each item to make sure that I have nothing for sale that will round down? Wouldn't be that tough to do, and you know there are crooked businesses out there that will look to make that extra couple cents on each sale.

Fair enough, I'm well off enough that it doesn't bother me either. But large retailers could exploit this to make themselves a few extra dollars, and they do all add up. A dollar a month doesn't matter to me now, and I hope it never will, but it could still happen one day.

Why are dollar bills a bad thing? It would be a complete waste of money for the US to go to coins.

Curious, how would it be a "waste of money" to switch to the dollar coin?

Coins are more cost effective. It cost rough 10 cent to print a dollar (9.6 if you want to be picky) and 30 cent to mint the coin.

However, coins are more cost-effective than dollar bills. A coin can last 30 years, but a new dollar bill will be ready for the shredder in less than four years.

You wouldn't need to mint as many to replace the stock..

So many people are forgetting about the rounding up

So if I buy 7 1p sweets, it'll cost me 5p?
