so i have been playing lately and i have come to notice a nasty hum whether im on clean or dirty also now and then if im playing leads the volume will fluctuate slightly. im using a boss ns2 with the x connection. im not sure what the issue could be and i dont want to jump to conclusions and swap out power tubes without trying everything . here is a list of things that i have checked

1. tapped all tubes for micophonics nothing. swapped v3 with another ecc83s and even put a ecc81 in v1. nothing. v3 is supposed to be the fx loop driver. the only tube i have not swapped is v4. can v4 effect the power tubes that much if it goes bad?
2. checked all cords and jacks
3. sprayed detoxit on all tube connections
4. tried different guitars.

im thinking that it could be the start of power tube failure but i dont know for sure. i have a spare set of el34's sitting around but they are old as well. any other ideas?

V4 is probably the phase inverter. That is considered part of the power section actually. Give it a try!

Do you have anything like computer monitors or flourescent lights on when you get the hum?

Try a 5751 in the PI/V4, or just another 12ax7

so i swapped v4 out with another ecc83s and the noise went down some and the volume drops stopped. so that was cool and just to double check i put the tube that was in v4 in v1 and sure as heck volume drops and lack of tone. also alot of noise was coming from a cable i swapped out every single cable again and one of the cables was crapping out on me.

so why am i told by some that v4 has to be balanced and by some they say it doesnt? what does being balanced have to do with anything?

The PI does not have to be balanced, but it's not like it is a bad thing to get a balanced PI tube. Some people claim that amps sound better with a balanced tube in the PI, many others say that it is BS.
I have heard both from amp builders.

Ideally they should be balanced, but in actuality they never are. Sometimes non balanced are preferred by people. Power tubes are never fully balanced anyways.

Basically the PI splits it signal 180 degrees for push/pull amps.

Glad it was only the PI tube. I'd hate to see you have another problem like you did on your legacy. Did you ever find the culprit on that?

See, it's important that people clarify when they say "metal", because I pretty much always assume they are a Cannibal Corpse fanboi.

i see. even if it plays a larger role to the power amp its just another preamp tube that any 12ax7 can fill. cool.

about the legacy. yeah it was a combo of things. some of the peramiters in the gt10 were messed up and the legacy did not like the gt10. live it was alright but the 3120 is a better amp overall

Your wording could go either way, but I thought I would clear this up anyway: the PI is part of the Power Amp, even though it uses the same tubes present in the Preamp.

I want to second the idea of getting a JAN Phillips 5751 for the PI. Some websites will give you the option of getting a Balanced tube, although idk if that's true for the 5751, since it's technically a NOS tube.
