Hi all. Im looking for some suggestions on a rackmount power amp.

I am running AxeFX Ultra at the moment rhough a Marshall MF350 Head into 4x12 quad ( both Mesa and Marshall1960A

Sounds average and just doesnt do it for me. There are so many options for power amps out there, its hard to decide on which way to go....

What are some recommendations from AxeFX users out there that have nailed there sound with the Axefx through a quad.

I play in a metal band but i also have other things that are less metalish that i do as well.

I keep hearing about the Matrix GT800FX SS poweramps but then you hear about good tube ones too!!

There are a few good options out there (including those ^) but go for something pretty big (ie 50/50 bare minimum) so you aren't introducing any power amp distortion. You want plenty of headroom under the AxeFX.

Ive almost got my 5150 sound perfect out of the axefx but i just cant get that balls to the wall sound because of a shitty poweramp. I love my 5150 through both mesa and marshall heads for the metal side of what i play. The sound is full and huge. If i could get a poweramp that could deliver me that kind of result, i would be as happy as a pig in poop!

If you can afford it, get a big Mesa. If you can't, get a Carvin. That would be my advice.

Thanks Cathbard. What i meant to say before is that i love the sound of my 5150 through both marshall and mesa CABS!! (not heads)

Prob dont have the coin for a mesa 2:90. even 2nd hand, in Aus they'd still fetch a pretty penny!
Would prob want to spend between $400 - $500 AUD possibly up to $600 if it was a good deal

Theres a peavey classic 60/60 for $400 with 6l6's

Im pretty sure they are 120WATT bridged at 8ohm. Both my cabs are 16ohm. Im really not sure how this will affect the sound. Im not an amp/cab freak. I just play guitar!

Peavey:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Peavey-classic-60-60-tube-power-amp-/190813953490?pt=AU_Amplifiers&hash=item2c6d65ddd2&_uhb=1#ht_500wt_1205

Perreaux:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PERREAUX-PMF1050-HOME-THEATRE-PRO-AUDIO-STEREO-DUAL-CHANNEL-POWER-AMPLIFIER-/170934751575?pt=AU_Electronics_Audio_Amplifiers&hash=item27cc815157&_uhb=1#ht_5986wt_1170

The Perreaux isn't a guitar power amp per se but they are one of the best power amps made by anybody, anywhere, ever. They are calling it a home theatre amp but it's a Perreaux, they make awesome PA power amps. About as flat as you can get - which is what you want.
I've seen a few Perreaux power amps on ebay for cheap lately. They were an expensive top end piece of kit when they first came out. May be worth doing a bit of a search for one. If you can find a 2150 or similar, grab it.

It would do they job just fine but I'd probably go for the Perreaux. Perreaux shit is off tap. Probably the best thing to come out of NZ ever. They're over engineered to hell. They used 2150's (10 of them) for the Melbourne tennis centre and you know how big that joint is.

I'm in Bendigo and not really. I'm retired now pretty much. I just kick back and build things I'm interested in now.

Btw, just to give you an idea, Perreaux power amps cost two or three thousand dollars new in the 80's. $3000 was serious money back then. It's real top end stuff. They performed equally well for hifi and PA work. Amazing shit. You should see the insides of my 2150, everything looks like it belongs in an amp 5x the size. They produce more power than they quote and are flatter than the spec sheet says.

I guess what I am trying to get across to you is don't limit yourself to guitar power amps with your rig. A good PA power amp will do just as good a job, probably better. Your chances of getting a good PA amp in budget is greater.

A PA amp will produce a sound closer to what you are hearing through headphones (disregarding the effect of the speakers). A guitar power amp will colour it more. Either will work but a good PA amp will have a flatter response.
