I'm constructing a ginormous family tree and I've found some freaking awesome things. I've found that I have ties to Tangermünde, a historic German village, around the 13th century AD, as well as Renaissance-era Italy and France

Make your own trees and whatnot, use ancestry.com's free records, share them here, or not. I'm not gonna share mine yet, I still need to waste a few more hours working on it to make it adequate for public viewing :P

FYI: Approximately 1 in 10 kids were not fathered by their father (Source: Molecular Anthropology Proff.). If you want an accurate family tree (what is in your DNA) there are places that can give you a profile of your ancestry. My uni offers this service for 1 week of the year for $75. It's much more accurate and cooler.

My dad's been working on a family tree with bios of everyone on it for the last few years. It's complete up to the 1600s and then there's some guy from 1103 who we know we're descended from but no one knows anything about the links in between

If you're interested in ancestry, you might like reading The Seven Daughters of Eve by Bryan Sykes. He's the guy who's research allowed for the identification of Czar Nicholas II's family's remains. He discusses how every person in Europe is descended from one of 7 women (the seven daughters of Eve), proven by the fact that mitochondrial DNA is passed unchanged from mother to child, but not from the father. Very much written for the layperson, so no real scientific knowledge beyond secondary school learning is necessary.

Well, ancestry.com is shit. It doesn't even have my grandma. I'm done.

edit: oh, that's the yank site.

edit2: nope, even .co.uk doesn't have her.

Your grandma was a spy from the MI8, that why you don't find any record of her

Nah, it's a common myth but isn't the case.

Dad's side: My Swedish great-great-great-grandfather married a South African, then their kids built a boat called 'The Wallin' (valley in swedish) and went to Australia or something.

Woo!

Mum's French. Know nothing about the rest of her background though.

I guess 1 in 30 does sound a little more reasonable. But my point was that it does happen with an uncomfortable frequency.

Nobody will talk about my great grandpa on my mother's side and my father's side insists we're related to Joseph Smith so I just tell people I'm from China.
