Knowledge etc
Which aspect of Basses you have the most proficieny in, (Playing and Technique\Building and maintaining\Composing and theory\ Gear: For playing and technique, Its well and good to start with grueling practice sessions. But working for 3-6 hours on the techniques you need to practice has a better effect than working 12 hours on rehashing crap. Refresh and Learn; we are all students of music forever. For maintaining bass, I am very keen on working on my own basses. I have to have the strings slightly elevated for my finger style playing. When composing, I will ask the lead player what scale he or she will be using for a composition. This can help provide a solid sound to a composition.

Which instruments can you play, except Bass: Guitar, piano.

Bass Guitars
Current Bass\es:
A pretty decent P-Bass clone, Ibanez BTB200 and lately on the odd occasion a Squier VM Jazz 5 from a guitarist friend.
Favourite Bass you own: Depends on my mood.
Favourite Bass you've played: Fender American Deluxe Jazz. It was one of those ones that just resonated perfectly. Played some nice Foderas, Alembics and Ritters too, but I only liked them aesthetically rather than sonically.
Dream Bass: Custom made 5 String Sadowsky Jazz 5.

Amps
Current amp\s:
Ashdown ABM900, Ashdown Neo410, Ashdown Perfect 10 practice mini stack, Peavey Max158
Favourite amp you own: The ABM900 on the 4x10.
Favourite amp you've played on: Gigged on a SVT through an Ampeg 8x10 once. That was a good gig, tone-wise.
Dream amp: Tonally? SVT stack. Practically? A lightweight Aguilar or Markbass rig.

Effects
Do you use effects?, if so, which?:
Sparingly, I have a chorus, overdrive and wah. Compressor and octave on my amp head too.
Which effects do you own: Cheap Behringher versions of them all.
Favourite effect: Compressor in the studio. Octave live.

Genres
Genres you play:
You name it. Rock, motown, funk, punk, pop, r&B, hip hop, musical theatre. I do a little session work and I help record other people, so I've kinda picked up a lot of genres under my belt.
Genres you enjoy playing: Anything with a nice backbeat.
Favourite genre to play: Pop Rock is always a guilty pleasure. There's something to be said about the comfort of chugging root notes. Tis a nice break.
Bands you are in: On The Way (on hiatus). Also starting up a few projects with people I know. And session stuff where I'm just a hired gun.

Knowledge etc
Which aspect of Basses you have the most proficiency in, (Playing and Technique\Building and maintaining\Composing and theory\ Gear
: All of the above except for building and maintaining. I'm a gear whore, I've been lucky enough to learn under a great session player so I'm a stickler for technique and playing. Plus I've kinda been forced into knowing compositional skills and theory because it's easier and fast to communicate with people in a studio if you have these skills.
Favourite famous bass player: James Jamerson. No contest.
Famous bass player you think you most resemble in style or personality: I have no clue. I'd like to say Adam Blackstone, because he's the faceless man behind so much great work. But I'm a long way off.

Bass Guitars
Current Bass\es:
Fender Squier Jazz Bass; Affinity Series, Jay Turser JTB-550 Electric Bass Guitar (P/J), Fender Acoustic Bass (I don’t even know, man, the model is literally “BG” for Bass Guitar)
Favourite Bass you own: Probably the Squier
Favourite Bass you've played: I haven’t really been around much but Kala U-basses seem cool, and I like Thunderbirds.
Dream Bass: Probably a desert gold Rickenbacker

Amps
Current amp\s:
Fender Rumble 15
Favourite amp you own: Only bass amp I have
Favourite amp you've played on: I’ll have to get back to you on this, whatever amp my church has sounds great.
Dream amp: Probably that amp at my church.

Effects
Do you use effects?, if so, which?:
I don’t really use effects but I have a Digitech pedal thing.
Which effects do you own: Digitech pedal thing.
Favourite effect: I like messing around with Wah’s and reverb to get a Daft Punk sound.

Genres
Genres you play:
The list of what I don’t really play would probably be better. I’m not really into metal or dubstep, I’m more mellow, so nothing too fast or ‘noisy’.
Genres you enjoy playing: Punk, alternative, jazz is cool, folk, indie, regular rock, I love post-rock, and techno sometimes, but not often.
Favourite genre to play: Whatever sounds good
Bands you are in: Just my church’s band

Knowledge etc
Which aspect of Basses you have the most proficiency in, (Playing and Technique\Building and maintaining\Composing and theory\ Gear:
I guess playing and technique. I try to learn a lot of music theory so that I understand exactly what I’m playing, but I really like looking at the mechanics of it, as opposed to composing. For instance, I haven’t written much really, but I do like rewriting some songs that I find so that they’re played in a different tuning with notes closer together or whatever, so that the playing is more fluid. I also really like the tech side because I like being able to modify things, and I’ve never been into cars or other things most guys my age are, so it’s really nice that I finally found something that I can just catch a glimpse of on a music video and say “Oh yeah, that guy’s playing a xxx bass, those have a good sound.”
Favourite famous bass player: As I said, I just started playing 6 months ago and I never really paid much attention to individual band members before then, so this is a bit hard. That being said, I like Mark Stoermer a lot, and try to play a lot of music by The Killers. Obviously Flea too, but I can’t slap to save my life...At least not yet.
Famous bass player you think you most resemble in style or personality: Not knowing too many players, I don’t really know too many personalities, but like I said above, my style is similar to Mark Stoermer’s. At least I think.

General information

Age: 22
First name: Bryn
Location: York, UK
Been playing for: About 12 years or so.
Which instruments can you play, except Bass: Guitar, drums, tuba (studying at university level), trombone, bit of piano.

Bass Guitars

Current Bass\es: Fender MiM Precision Special (1998), Olympic White with tortoiseshell pick guard and maple 'board.
Favourite Bass you own: As above.
Favourite Bass you've played: Rickenbacker 4003, Fender Precision USA, and my own.
Dream Bass: Mine, but with upgraded pickups and hardware.

Amps

Current amp\s: Torque T10 (practice amp), Londoner L100A multi-purpose amp (loud as hell - my only requisite). Both 'vintage', but in the sense that no one else wanted them, so I suppose just 'old'.
Favourite amp you own: The Torque makes a nicer, warmer sound, but the Londoner is much louder (as expected, 100 watts solid state), and handles my fuzz tone better.
Favourite amp you've played on: Ampeg SVT Stack (owned by a local recording studio).
Dream amp: Something loud and obnoxious and bassy, bi-amped with something loud and obnoxious and trebly, with different fuzzes sent to both to make a massive, obnoxious sound.

Effects

Do you use effects?, if so, which?: I use effects as a key part of my sound (think JFK from DFA1979, though he just uses an overdriven, modded amp), and use a Bass Big Muff, MXR 10 Band EQ, Dr Tone Delay, Joyo Compressor and Marshall JH-1 Overdrive.
Which effects do you own: All the above.
Favourite effect: Big Muff.

Genres

Genres you play: At present, indie, alt rock, jazz, noise punk, motown and progressive rock/metal.
Genres you enjoy playing: All the above, obviously, plus classic rock, old pop music (when bass players actually cared about the bass lines they wrote), folk, metal and stoner rock.
Favourite genre to play: Probably jazz, because of the freedom and application of theoretical knowledge, but I love just cranking up the fuzz and chugging out some big, dirty riffs too.
Bands you are in: Planning a stripped down and dirty 2 piece bass/drums combo with a friend, channelling DFA1979, Royal Blood, White Stripes, Clatter, QOTSA etc.

Knowledge etc.

Which aspect of Basses you have the most proficiency in, (Playing and Technique\Building and maintaining\Composing and theory\ Gear: Probably theory, but I know my way around a studio too and have modded a lot of my gear.
Favourite famous bass players: Jesse F. Keeler, from DFA1979 and John Deacon of Queen. Mike Kerr from Royal Blood is pretty sick too.
Famous bass player you think you most resemble in style or personality: I'm not much for the 'frontman' type act, and while not saying much, I just play hugely loud, fuzzed up riffs. I'd go as far to say maybe John Entwistle, in terms of his quiet onstage demeanour, with commanding, up front bass playing.

General information:
Age: 24
First name: Tom
Location: Hertfordshire, UK
Been playing for: 10 years
Which instruments can you play, except Bass: Guitar, keyboard, and a low level of proficiency at drums, ukelele, mandolin and harmonica.

Bass Guitars
Current Bass\es: Sandberg California JM5, EBMM Stingray HH, modded Squier J.
Favourite Bass you own: The Sandberg
Favourite Bass you've played: Also my Sandberg
Dream Bass: I don't need to buy another bass ever again, the Sandberg ticks all my boxes, and probably ever will, but I'd love a Rickenbacker or an acoustic bass just to satisfy my GAS.

Amps
Current amp\s: Orange Bass Terror 500, Orange SP410 cab, Orange Crush PiX
Favourite amp you own: Definitely the Terror
Favourite amp you've played on: Markbass Little Mark 3, but that was before I ever played anything with valves, so this is probably an outdated favourite.
Dream amp: I have yet to find anything that suits my taste in tone better than my Orange set-up with my Sandberg.

Effects
Do you use effects?, if so, which?: SansAmp VT Bass EQ pedal, which is either a tonal aid, or a distortion pedal, depending on my mood and what I'm playing.

Genres
Genres you play: Rock, blues, pop, metal etc - I'm not fussy
Genres you enjoy playing: Rock and blues especially.
Bands you are in: Previously played in Flashheart. Now writing and recording music for a new solo project, The Tiger Suit.

Favourite famous bass player: Zach Cooper of Coheed and Cambria or Greg MacPherson of InMe

Hello all. My name is Jeremy. I am actually new to bass. I have been playing guitar for over 13 years, and am switching to bass for a particular band. The only thing comfortable about the bass is the rhythm part of it. Since I work on rhythm all the time, I can naturally get a good groove going, BUT the picking technique feels SO different, and the size of the frets are intimidating. Other than that I have a LOT of fun playing bass.

I don't understand how people can look down on bass players or why people think they're "too good" for it. This stuff is FUN!!!!!

Also, I haven't yet bought my own. Any tips on what to look for? I know for sure my favorite fretboard is rosewood. But what else should I look for if I want a good sound for metal/hard rock (sort of like BFMV), that also looks real nice? Thanks!!!!

need an amplifier. Bass amps need more power to drive the lower frequencies so I would get one that has at least 50 watts. There is also a Bass trainer that is pretty cool.

There's a man that knows what he likes. Any thoughts on the Workshop BTBs?

Funny you ask Spaz.

For my tone, influenced by Entwistle on My Generation, which is a Danelectro, to Greg Lake's Alembic 8 String, and Geddy's Rick [which was actually his 65 Jazz], I was never after depth or mush. Such things were easy to get with a P Bass and neck position playing.

The 1006 does depth due to the Mahogany Core. Would like an Ebony Board, but that would be even yet more darkness.

Getting closer to the answer you seek...the 400 Series of the BTBs are all I could ever tonally dream of.

Basswood clarity. I desire no color or darkness.

Walnut stringers. The Bubinga on the 1006 needed adjustment first before any of my Walnut basses. [In January the 1006 took a spill right on to the head stock on a stepped stage. It was moved -2 cents out of tune on the lower strings. It is still going.]

Maple Top and Neck sections for beauty and snap.

Bolt on Neck for punch. [Adam Nitti told me of this in 05. I had to finally get a hold of a top of the line Ken Smith to feel no joy in the Holy Grail of 6 Strings, and then wander around the Bass Gallery a few more minutes and find a Bolt on Ken Smith to find the inspiration was in steel screws,]

Variable midrange frequency sweep [None of the Preamp makers get the mid frequency right for me]

This is what I have learned is the root of my tone, which made the MD at Dollywood literally drool and say "God, I love the tone! Where have you been?"

Workshops just do not have any, and I mean ANY, of these attributes.

I look into buying used 400 Series for parts and refinishing to get a Blue 6 , as I wait for Ibanez to do a 10 year Anniversary reissue of the 456. Even a 15 year Anniversary of the 406 in Blue.

If the neck aspects on the StingRay were not battish, I would not have ever looked at the BTB...well except when I found a 6 String.

So, because of the 6 String models, the 400 BTB stands in a non substitute position for me. [It easily gets the Ray Tone, and the Danelectro]

Because the 456 inspires me more than a One Piece Ken Smith, it has indeterminate value to me. It is quintessential to what Ken has done with the Bass Guitar, but for us poor folks, yet it kicks his set neck bass's ass.

P, J, Sting Ray, Ken Smith, BTB456 - for me the evolution was complete. The only curiosity I have right now is a Status 6 with the LEDs and a non standard body shape that I would have to have worked up.

Inspiration to me is this- when you pick up an instrument and you begin playing and hearing things that you never believed you could do nor imagined.
