Hey guys,

I just joined a band as the bass player/vocalist, but Im pretty much a guitar player fooling the audience that i play the bass. I need a bass rig, but Im 100% lost lost and confused in the world of bass gear.

Im playing metal/djent/metalcore kinda stuff, we're getting more technical as we go.

So what kinda bass and amps and other gear do I need?

I was looking at getting a Jazz bass, In guitar I really dont like active pick ups, but my friend said that an active jazz bass would be better and not to afraid of emg's in bass.

And with bass amps and cabs I have no clue what to get. I was looking at the Darkglass B7m pre amp that Nolly in Periphery uses. But Im not in a position where I can reliably have a pa to go di into.

So sorry if I sound stupid I really have NO clue about any of this.

Prolly around $1000ish, but I work at GC (In pro Audio) so I can get fat discounts.

I dont see or feel a need to get an American Standard when it comes to the bass its self, American Special or lower, not squire though.

Edit: Im open to fender, Ibanez, and LTD

Nothing wrong with Squire basses. As I understand it, Squire guitars are generally poor quality but the basses are actually decent. I wouldn't immediately count them out, you should try em.

But I really don't want to do a pick up swap, and Though I will agree cause I have played a squire bass, the quality is WAY better then their guitars, the pick ups are pretty poor

Well if you want a jazz bass, you'd probably be best off getting a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz, the pickups aren't terrible and it'll be the best value. That would leave you with a tidy sum to put into a good amp, which frankly is more important provided the bass is decent (which the CVs are).

For an amp you want as much headroom as you can afford (that's not a Behringer). 200+ watts is generally recommended if you can't count on PA support, 300-500+ is better if you can afford it. I always recommend Markbass, and you can find a used Little Mark for $40 or less. GK, Carvin, Hartke, SWR, or Genz Benz and Eden if can afford them are all brands worth checking out. Look for a solid 4x10 or two 2x10s (Carvin and Avatar make good affordable cabs) and you should be good to go.

You could check out CL or some pawn shops for second hand stuff, but all that is really a supply/demand kind of thing. MIM Jazz basses can be had for less than $300, and at least in my neck of the woods, I see MIM Precisions go for as little as $200 quite often.

There's one pawn shop not far from me that has a Squier VM Jazz bass ($200) and a Carvin 500 watt head ($350), its a pity you don't line in SC. You could knock out 2/3ds of your list with half your budget left.

I went to my work and tried an Ibanez SR600 and fell in love with the neck and sound of the bass, and the weight! With my discount I think I can get it for real cheap. Leaving me plenty for an amp and cab and stuff. Thanks for all the help guys

You might want to replace the pups and preamp in the SR later on.

Anyways it's a nice bass overall. Oh and welcome to the Ibanez bass family.
Damn it! Disable can't use disable to disable Disable's disable because disable's disable has already been disabled by Disable's disable!
