I would go broke if I bought every $1.29 and $0.99 song in my library from iTunes, but I can't pirate forever...

...So what's the best service to use to get songs from? You know, those ones that you pay a monthly or whatever subscription to and can download as many songs as you can find. I listen to some out-there indie/hipster stuff, so I need one with a good range. At least as good as iTunes. Also which ones have the best price, best audio quality, etc.

I've really never even looked into this before and I don't even know what these services are or how they work. Applications? Websites? Any info would be helpful.

Oh yeah, it would be nice if it was legal, too.

Not sure about your Walmart, but check the clearance bins up front which will have full hard copies of albums going usually for $5. Usually it will be country, generic classic rock (AC/DC, Zeppelin), crappy hair metal (such as Poison), and shitpop, but there is always that one occasional hidden-jem in that pile.

I found a Jethro Tull greatest hits album in their the other day for $5 (except I already own it ), as well as Black Sabbath's first album. Not the best music, but it's cheap as dirt, and they're hard copies.

I'm not sure of it's legality, but I saw someone on here mention Grooveshark recently and I think it's great. They even seem to have a lot of things Spotify doesn't (though I'm mostly referring to sort of "underground" stuff like Sopor Aeternus).

What's even better is that you can see comments and recent activity (like songs being added to favorites lists and whatnot) on an album/artist/song, and through looking at other profiles you can sometimes find music similar to what you're listening to.

The only issues I've had with it is that sometimes songs don't play properly, and I know of at least one album that has a live version of a song in place of the studio version, which I find a bit annoying.

Spotify.

It's good, it's cheap, and if they ever don't have something I want (which, reasonably, isn't totally often), then I'll just pirate it.

But, in terms of legal music software, Spotify is totally where it's at. There aren't many out there.

Also, protip, there's an app on the Android market (and maybe iOS?) called Songza. It's a free playlist app with loads, and loads, and loads of great stuff. Totally free, and, while you can't control the individual song you hear, the playlists are very well made.

Think of it like Pandora, but for playlists.

Grooveshark is the best in terms of the size of its library, but I believe it is user-uploaded so OCCASIONALLY (very rarely) you might get a song that is labeled incorrectly. Other than that, it is extremely comparable to Spotify.

Spotify is more reliable, has a better interface, runs faster, and if you pay for the service you can take it mobile and there are no ads, but it has a slightly more mainstream library. However, the ways that it outweighs Grooveshark are not extreme enough to the point that it would be a pain to have to migrate from Spotify to Grooveshark.

Basically my point is that Spotify is probably ever so slightly more worth it, but depending on how obscure and varied your musical taste is, you would be better off going with Grooveshark and you wouldn't be missing out on anything.

maybe the whole idea of music being pressed onto records is wrong in itself. maybe music shouldnt be recorded, maybe it should only be played live? or maybe recorded music should be free like looking at a copied art work, but live music is what you pay for.

If you need the files on your computer then bandcamp is the way to go. They've got tons of free stuff and you can get lossless files too. pretty much my whole music collection is either FLAC or ALAC.

Spotify is good but the quality sucks and it's more like listening to a full record being played over the radio imo.

Band camp.

Emusic your first 20 downloads are free when you sign up or something like that.

Also between spotify and pandora, spotify at least pays me when my music is streamed, even if pandora pays, I wouldn't know, because I've never submitted an album for them.

For example on bandcamp, my album is 10.99 on google play, 8.99 on iTunes, 3 dollars on bandcamp.

I frequently find albums on Amazon cheaper than I would find them on iTunes. Even if it's like $0.50 cheaper, I'm still saving.

Also, I really enjoy last.fm.

Probably because it's the morally good* thing to do...

I don't mind the radio occasionally, but fact is that they stopped putting tape decks in car radios (unless you pay extra for it). Also, I'm only 24, and I remember cars having tape decks in the radio.

Yea, I was just thinking about recording songs off the radio as a kid.
If I had no money I'd take one of my parents original tapes and cover the little tabs up the top with sticky tape so I could record over them.
That was about 24 years ago, hence the "man I'm old".

Amazon mp3.
I have an iPod but the iTunes store sucks. I hate having to put in my password 3 times just to buy anything, Amazon is way quicker in that respect and I can stream the albums to my mobile via their app. also automatically puts the new stuff in iTunes unlike buying from other sources.

I use Grooveshark myself and I even pay for a subscription to get rid of the ads and get their desktop app and whatnot. I don't think the ability exists anymore to buy the songs from an iTunes link with the new Grooveshark (they do use Flattr though).

I have very few problems, other than occasionally having to re-add a song or two to my playlist if a user account is closed and therefore the song lost or something. Their support is always awesome, very down-to-earth and extremely helpful.

If anyone does use Grooveshark actively, check out and follow my artist account:

I'm on Spotify right now. For an all round library and player it's the best really.

Due to how their deals with labels work it doesn't have bits and pieces sometimes, but it's never been anything that's really bothered me. I occasionally hear people mentioning the quality, but unless you're an audiophile it's perfectly fine (and at the very least equivalent to any other streaming service).

Bandcamp is also quite good, but is much more limited and isn't really a media player. Bands usually have an album at least up on their you can listen to for free though, and since the bands upload it themselves that usually includes bands too small to be on spotify.
