Concerning the technique called follow the leader:

Which finger do you find is the easiest to follow? Do you ever change the lead finger depending if you are going up or down the fret board?

Do you concentrate on where the lead finger goes to in the next chord, and let muscle memory place the other fingers into the chord shape?
Muscle memory plays a big part in fast chord progressions, yes. I've always found my ring finger most... compliant... but providing your hands are in good shape even the pinkie will soon adjust to more complex chords and progressions in time!

Much of the aforementioned will be because of "jazz shapes" which I commonly use, in which 9ths, minor 7ths and extensions of each often involve barring with the ring finger.
