Soon I'm getting a 60W tube amp head with a 4x12. When I play gigs it's fine because I'll be playing loud. But when I play at home I want to be able to play at low volumes but still get a good sound. How can I do this? I've heard about glass screens that you put in front of the amp which 'capture' the sound. Also I've heard about these little cupboard things that you put the cab into and you close the door and the sound still gets through, but at a low volume.

What amp is it?

The cupboard thing that your thinking of is called and isolation box. Like this one , offered by Jet City. There are also other types that you can by which let you put your whole amp inside it.

Another option would be an attenuator like the Hot Plate

^ those are some options as is facing the amp into the wall, blankets, volume knobs, etc.

but you realize a 60w amp and a 412 cab will be loud right?

what amp did you get and what kind of music do you play?

Yeah because I'm playing gigs so I need loud but I also want to ge a good tone at low volumes. I just need something for now until I can buy a 2x12 to use at home for low volumes.

The amp does have a 'watt control' but I haven't tried it yet.

Volume knob?

Do you know if it sounds bad at low volumes or are you just expecting it to sound bad at low volumes? And if it has a wattage control, isn't that pretty much the same as built in attenuator? So yeah, use the wattage knob and volume knob.

And I don't think playing through a 2x12 will be that much quieter than a 4x12.

Matt,

Until you:

1.) Tell us what the amp is

2.) Actually get the amp

3.) Actually play the amp

4.) Actually experiment with the volume and watt control

5.) Actually experiment with some of the common sense ideas

then I deem this thread null and void

This.

How do you know that the amp doesn't sound good at low volumes? There are many amps that sound good at both low and high volumes, no matter what wattage.

I don't really see the point of this thread.

is the amp a laney ironheart 60?
I've heard mixed things about the wattage control. However, it isn't really going to significantly chancge volume if it's anything like the egnater rebel. what it will change is the headroom.
play it and see.

Tone is in the fingers.

What you really need is a new amp.

(Anything I missed?)

I have been hearing about MG amps lately. I have heard good about them, but only a few times have they been talked about here.

Yes it is the Ironheart. I tried it in the store with the volume about halfway, but I was playing through a 2x12 and I'm getting it with a 4x12
