(Mods if this is in the wrong place please let me know where to post this)

I see a lot of video's posted on here yet I don't see many reviews. Even with some of the posts that get a lot of views, they may only get a few sentences of feedback. I don't get it.

I try to write on every thread that I check out. Good bad or otherwise. Do it, and ask for a c4c, just because that's the only way we can really generate interest to watch the video's we aren't interested in watching.

You should be watching the things that don't interest you just for the sake of giving a person a review and then getting one back yourself. Listening to things we wouldn't usually listen to gives our ears exercise. Sitting down and listening to someone play a specific part, like a guitar solo, or a bass run makes you use your ears to listen to a very specific set of sounds in a recording. This makes it easier for your ears to hear the exact part your listening for. So it gives you chance to improve what you hear.

It also exposes you to things you may not have heard done with a guitar. From Brad Paisleys Chickin picken twangy attack to Zakk Wyldes monster pinch harmonics there are a large amount of things that can be done with a guitar. Hearing/seeing someone do something differently or just doing something you've never seen done before can enlighten you and give you an idea for something new to try and learn and incorporate into your own playing.

The point I'm trying to make is that we have to actually have to make the effort to be a community of musicians who can review and give constructive criticism in an adult fashion, in such a way that we can give everyone some feedback. To many video's go by with no comments.

You know that'll never happen. Songwriting and Lyrics has a rule that says you have to crit at least three pieces for every one you post. If that actually happened, they wouldn't have as many threads with zero replies as they do.
Part of the problem is that people don't criticize things that needs to be criticized, because they're scared someone will (god forbid) do the same thing to them. So whenever someone does say something, it's a "nice lol c4c?".
Part of it is that people don't know how to give good feedback or criticism. Half the site still thinks "criticism" always means "negative" or "haters gunna h8", so how can you expect them to all be the second coming of Roger Ebert?
And part of it is that people just plain don't give a shit. People post here to promote their music, hope it gets some precious, precious pageviews, and get the fuck out. That's just the circle of life. Hakuna Matata, biatch.

I totally agree. At the same time it seems like its worth a stab.

If your reply isn't 3-5 sentences its not even a review. If they just want views why don't they reddit? seriously. This should be a place that we can grow and learn as musicians. If you can't take criticism why post here? I also hate the trend that you only get a lot of replies doing certain styles of music or certain artists. Every one wants to criticize a cover of van halens version of pretty woman, no one wants to review a roy orbison version of it.

Haters gonna hate. "Look at my super badass amazing totally awesome liquid alabama snake version of this steve vai song man itll make ya go ape shit trust me you'll love it itll be awesome"

You're right, it is worth a try, but I think there's something deeper going on here, with the attitudes of people that come in here expecting too much. It's not something that can be fixed by changing the rules.
In a way, Ultimate Guitar is sort of the DeviantArt of modern music. People start here because it's sort of there, and either move on to a more professional site, or don't. I'm starting to wonder if I should really be here.

I don't want to change the rules, let people do as they want, but there are those of us here (and are here pretty frequently) That know what a well written short review should look like.

My formula

One sentence for every min of playing. 4:34=4
One sentence about the mix.
One sentence about the quality of the video/lighting/effects/editing.

I may go into more depth on the mix and quality if I think it might help someone record a better video next time.

**** being afraid to tell people like it is too. Don't bash some one cause you don't like the song they chose, that's an asshole thing to do. But be critical of what the user did to make their video. If its obvious it sucks then yea be blunt in a fair and kind way. You don't have to be mean, learn to say things in a positive way.

DON"T TELL US ANYTHING IN THE STARTING POST. really.

Just post the link and the title. Maybe a detail like "Full band cover" or "c4c". Don't put opinions like "your gonna love it, trust me" or "Check this amazing cover". Leave people with no expectations and let them form their ideas. Plus it look like a child screaming "look daddy look daddy" when people post like that.

I agree with you man but I'm sure people don't even watch full videos, that also has to do with our modern attention spans, everything is quick and on the go. I wanna do a cover of Save Me from avenged sevenfold, but the song is eleven minutes long and I'm sure people ain't gonna sit through all that. They'll proudly watch 20 seconds of it, like or hate it, say good job C4C and that's it. So is it worth it to waste god knows how long, recording several vids of the vocals and guitar, then spending time editing the audio in our DAW's then editing the video, if no-one is gonna give a shit. Perhaps not, you have videos where there is zero video audio editing and millions of views, then you have bad ass videos that have like 200.

I know when I watch a video to critique I watch the whole thing, I don't write a whole lot, but ill definitely mention parts that are good and parts that need work.

I agree totally. People hardly watch video's all the way thru. But That's why I do. And why I mention something that happens late in the video to let people know, hey, I watched you all the way thru.

It sucks to wanna do long hard covers with multiple shots and instruments. Just to know people wont watch it. In my fishing in the dark video my daughter video bombs me around a min into it but Ive never heard one comment on it cause I assume people don't make it that far in.

I like the way you think, caw1! That was a pretty good idea you had about the 3+ sentence critique. I honestly think that if more people critiqued that way, then UG would no doubt be one of the best places (if not, the best place) to post in terms of reviews, which would make the website/forum even better than it already is. I know that I need to work on giving more critiques on covers posted here, so I'll do my best to put that idea into motion!

I'm just taking what I learned about critiquing art and applying it here. Don't hate the subject matter, even if you do really hate it.

Look for the efforts. The details. The things the Artist did. The things the artist didn't do. Try to end on a positive note.

Its a thought to consider.

Still, I'm done with people who bump. bump = no review. I dont get why we have rules if the mods arent going to enforce them.
