I wonder what advice you have with regards to getting better at voice-leading and counterpoint. I've done/am still doing academic-style chorale writing and species counterpoint but then I look at actual chorales by Bach and Motets by Palestrina and fall on my knees and weep at my inadequacy ;_;

I don't have any more tricks or tips. It is all a language and you can only be fluent in it by submerging yourself in it and listening to the point where you can finish their sentences before they do. Academia alone won't get you very far.

And also, all that matters is 2 lines. Focus on getting good at that. If you can do 2 lines, you can do it all.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Sounds good, some bits remind me of Brahms' Intermezzo in Bb minor.

Thanks man. As you'd expect, I have gotten a lot of Brahms influence I've learned so much from his music this past year.

I am still sketching out the first theme. I'm having a lot of trouble with it but when I figure out what to do next, it's like a revelation. Hoping to have another WIP update by the end of the week.

OK, hard work it is I guess.

^Absolutely. Don't fall into the romantic notion that writing is something that you can just do if you have enough "inspiration", whatever the hell that means. It is a craft just like any other and is no exception to the 10,000 hours rule.

I've fleshed out the first theme and transition just before the 2nd theme comes in. I wanna thank you, TS, for pushing me to do this.

Can we have the score? And perhaps the score of the first version. It would be cool to compare them. I really liked that. It actually sounded like a proper piece of music.

Is any one else going to finish the challenge? Griff was working on something. Did you finish? Anyone else? Because if everyone else flaked, then I've been thinking of another challenge.

Composition Challenge: A Turn of Phrase (cool title amirite?)

I think everyone should compose something based off a phrase like "everything seems fine on the surface, but not quite..." (notice the foreshadowing ellipsis) Now I know some people balk at word prompts or the possibility of making program music but I don't actually intend for this to be either. I'm using this phrase as a way to guide all the participants into working on the same problems. We're all going to have to establish a sense of "things being fine" and then through rhythm, texture, harmony, motive, theme ect suggest something being "off", then resolve it how they wish. I see it as more of a collective tension/release scheme then narrative music.

Well I sure hope so!!! That is my stated intention...

I don't have a score yet. I'm actually writing directly to DAW this time. As for the "first version", it was just this but only the top melody and the bass line in blocks.
