Pretty soon I will probably be selling my Ibanez RG4EXQM1 because of some things I don't like about it, mostly the Edge III floating tremolo. I change tunings a lot and it is quite a hassle having to adjust everything.

Anyways here's what I'd like with my next guitar:

Budget:
I think I'll get around $300 for my Ibanez, and I want to spend about $300-400 on my next guitar.

Favorite Artists/Style
In my current band I'm doing pop-punk with a little post-hardcore influence. I guess I'd like a sound close to A Day to Remember. I also play a little progressive metal and metalcore on my own, so if it could handle that too then it would be nice.

Preferences
The main things I'd like are a fixed bridge and a thin neck. I do really like the Tune-o-matic style bridges, but anything fixed is really fine. I did really like the Wizard II neck, and something about that thin would be nice. I prefer rosewood fretboards over maple. 24 frets would be nice, but 22 would be enough. Also I'd prefer a glossy finish over matte and chrome, nickel or black instead of gold hardware.

Pickups
I definitely want passives, and I definitely want humbuckers. HH and HSH both work. I'd like something pretty hot, and something tighter sounding than the INF's on my Ibanez. I'd be willing to deal with crappy pickups for a while and get better ones later (not included in the budget)

New or Used?
I'm willing to do either, and I don't care too much about scratches or anything. Refurbished or factory 2nd are fine too, although I don't really know much about those.

Location
I live in Michigan. I'd be willing to buy off of eBay, Amazon, Musician's Friend, Sweetwater, etc. however shipping would be included in the budget. I have a Guitar Center and Firehouse Guitars close enough to me. As far as Craigslist, I'm willing to drive almost anywhere in the state to pick up a guitar.

You'd be very lucky to get $200 for that guitar. More likely $150 or so on Craigslist.

I'd keep an eye out for an RG471 or RG421. The newer ones with the Gibralter bridges are very nice.

one of the hardtail ibanez rgs would probably be the thing, from what you've said. you'd just need to swap the pickups down the line.

I saw in a couple of pictures that on Bucketheads Les Paul (only some pictures) that his neck pickup is painted in white. Can anyone explain to me why he would do this, and if there are any pros and cons.

The guy wears a KFC Bucket and a white mask during performances, and you're interested in the color of his pickup covers?

Why would I only get $200 for my guitar? Everything I've seen on eBay has been selling for about $300-350, and mine is in pretty close to perfect condition.
#5
Because it was $450 brand new, and it's a mid end RG with an Edge III.

If they're actually selling for that much on eBay, get it up on eBay ASAP.

You might look for a used Godin Redline HB: http://godinguitars.com/godinredlinehbp.htm

New, they go right around $500, used, they should be right in your budget.

If I got a used RG421 what pickups would you recommend? Would D-Activators work well?

I do like the look of that Godin a lot. I've never had any experience with that brand, but I'll definitely look into it.

Godin generally makes a good product. Made in Canada, with fairly rigorous QC. I won't say they're perfect- nobody is- but I haven't handled a bad one yet.

EMGs would be a lot better. If you want to stay passive, D Activators aren't a bad choice. I have a set in my S420, but I also have an EMG 81/60 set in my EC-1000, and they really don't sound very similar to me at all, despite the fact that D Activators supposed to give an active sound in a passive format. But I guess they sound more reminiscence of EMGs than most other passives.

You could get any number of Ibanez S-series for that money, right up to an S720 or SZ720. You might also want to look into a PRS SE 24, Schecter C-1 Classic, or the aforementioned Godin Redline.

Why don't you save your money and just block the floating trem and get new pickups for your current guitar?
