Hey guys !
I like Stoner Metal more and more everyday. I don't think it is a period.
I went to a Stoner show in Paris, and i discovered that bass was very very important in Stoner Metal. The fact is I am just a beginner on bass and I have the project to create a Stoner band.

I would thank you so much if you can explain me how to play Stoner n bass ! Tips, advices or examples are welcome

Thank you guys !

The only advice i can give you is to play your favorite stoner metal albums, listen to what the bassist is doing and try to copy them.
One of the reasons i've decided to pick up the bass is because of Rex Brown's playing on Down III Over The Under, if you haven't already you should definitely pick up that album.
DISCLAIMER: There's a very good chance that i have no idea what i'm talking about.

Play over the neck (pick or fingers), beat the crap out of the strings and invest in an all-valve amp that you can barely lift. Keep it simple, over filling your music will ruin the stoner-rock vibe.

edit: Also buy one of these.

Step 1. Roll a big fat joint
Step 2. Proceed to smoke it.
Step 3. Smoke it
Step 4. Play bass and feel the low end, brotha.
In al seriousness, though. I'd reccommend listening to your favourite albums, bands and bassists and try and emulate them as much as you can. Eventually you'll get your own style. If you really like stoner Metal, why not try and play and listen to what influenced it too? that way you won't limit youself to one sub-genre.

Also, I'm not quite certain about this, but I think getting a Gibson Bass would give you the sound Stoner Metal has. They've got this fuzzy, muddy, awesome sound. Then again, don't take this too seriously, it's just a biased opinion.

Hope it helps!!!

Thank you all of you !

So, I sum up : I have to listen, and play.
Maybe getting the tab will help to understand what is playing.. What do you think ?

Also, I have not enough money to but a new bass (bought my first not long ago, and I just began to play so...). But I'd like to know how to make the 'Stoner sound'.. I have a Squier Jazz Bass Fretless and an amp Roland MicroCube 15 watts. Any tips ?

Thanks guys !

Well; you are going to need more amplifier firepower to nail the Stoner low/fuzzy/grinding tones, but in the meantime, go for the heavy low end, some dirt and stay away from frets above the 7th fret. You should be fine.

And don't skimp on the weed. They call it "Stoner" for a reason, you know.

I used to be a big stoner fan. Listen to a lot of Electric Wizard and Earth and you'll get the idea.

I'll echo the others. Look into the Ampeg SVT amps. I play a Spector through ampeg and I get compliments on my tone everywhere I go.
