I just can not for the life of me nail this MAB lick.. Or even make decent progress?? It's been one of my main alternate picking licks for a good year or so now? I'm starting to think when I re-learned my technique that it wasn't so great. I know it's not easy to get up to speed but surely after nine months I'd have something to show? This is just so hard for me and I don't know why. Is my technique really that bad where it could hinder my playing? Or does it just take THAT long to get killer alternate picking? Anyway I'm going to put the old video and the new in here and hopefully one of you will be able to help me. I know I should get a proper teacher and what not and I might just do that if you guys can't offer any more help...

New one

Sorry for the bad quality both were taken on my phone although the new video is on a worse phone..

Per john petrucci, hand stretches are key. Also, I know everyone holds their pick different, but for shredding I close my index finger, set the pick on it and cross my thumb over. Very little of the pick is showing. Then I use a combination of wrist and thumb twitch to get speed.

The magic trick : play it at 120% speed for about 5 minutes then come back to 100%.

Ha! Full speed is 127 bpm sextuplets. The old video is like 90ish and the new is like 105ish.not what I would expect from nine months if practice.

Yep.

Btw, you need to work on muting string noise and picking/fretting synchronization. I would slow it down a bit more.

Definitely on the new one too. Dont worry, you can never be too good at muting and hand synch anyway.

But the overall picking motion/technique is OK??

Does it feel good to you? The motions look a bit large to me but not terrible, just bear in mind as you go faster you have to make smaller motions.

I think I was moving a bit more cuz I was trying pretty hard to play fast. Can Iupl oad a video of me playing a bit slower then you can tell me if it looks OK in that? Also, yeah, it feels very good but I was struggling to play it that fast.

Do you tense while you play at that speed? If yes, slow down. You should practice at a speed that you feel comfortable and relax. Also it will make you play much cleaner in the long run.
