anything out there that is alright? like when i buy software i can clean up the audio bu it's still listenable?

The only free recording program is audiacity... but that isn't really good for actual demo making, mainly because of it's destructive editing.

Best bet is REAPER which is $60 for a full license. Cheapest you'll get and it's well worth the money.

Forgetting about Ardour, Chem? I mean, it doesn't have a windows version, but it's a full featured, free DAW. And even if you don't have a Mac, Linux runs on basically anything. So if you're dead set on not spending anything on software (which is a bad philosophy to start with), there are always options.
