Hello people, I"m going to be buying a new guitar soon and I"m trying to keep it under 400 dollars. I play a lot of glam rock like poison, motley crue etc. and also do some shredding. I live in a small town and there really are no very good music shops around for me to test guitars so I will have to order online. I was looking at the bc rich gunslinger retro and would like to have your opinions on the tone of the guitar. I was also looking at some ibanez guitars around the same price and would like to know what you guys think of some good models and how they sound.

Thanks for all the help!

Unless BC Rich has changed in the last 2 years, their guitars have been sawdust covered with paint for the last 10 or so years.

They actually use sandpaper as a shim for their neckjoints.

Ibanez is decent, nice thin necks with massive frets. Only advice there is if it has an Edge 3 or 2, its as useless as the sandpaper shim.

I'd really like to see the source of those claims.
Anyway...

BC Rich makes good guitars when you go to midrange and above but they have really hurt their reputation with their cheap lines. If you want BC Rich I would personally spend more than 400$.

I say go for Ibanez in this price range.

Not sure if it's quite THAT bad, but yeah, Ibanez for that price range.

As others have stated, when it comes to B.C. Rich stay away from the lower end guitars.

Geez, that guy (guitar owner, not Dave) must have installed the WHOLE string on the bass! I usually wrap a couple times, but damn!
Bernie Rico is rolling over in his grave. This is why BC Rich has no QC anymore. Rico used to personally QC everything made in the outside factories before he died. If it wasn't up to snuff, he sent it back.
His kids lacked the experience, know how, and desire to keep this up. Hence, since the late 90s, most BC Richs are trash.
Also, that Vid ws super fun to watch.

You should see the vid he does for the noiseless pickups in a telecaster. I don't even know how people use normal tuners anymore.

..damn.

Note to self: Never buy BC Rich with bolt-on neck.

That was hilarious vid though. Though as a fan of pointy designs (though not that pointy. Warlock gets a pass but Beast is just hideous) maybe I should feel offended on some of his remarks but I just couldnt stop smiling.

I like my Ibanez, I don't really like BC Rich guitars - not because of the muddy crap and whatnot (I'm a DIY kinda guy). But because they tend to be top heavy - that is my main gripe. Under $400 I'd say, if you can find a Scorpion - they have the best when it comes to quality of sound. But, realize that you'll probably have to get one used as they are probably discontinued.

Ibanez.

I would NEVER get a BC-R. But that's just me I don't hate people that like em.

Doesn't look bad. The Edge Zero 2 is a good tremolo.

Although, if you're looking for SUPREME stability with the tremolo, you should look at the ones with the ZPS in them. Some people complain about the sustain, but if you google "zps brass block" a company has started milling brass blocks for these to improve the sustain.

Who knows where the bass has been before he got to it, some other person probably tried to Mickey Mouse it or he was just trying to put the brand down himself. Plus he's biased against pointy guitars. I'd take that video with a grain of salt.

Having experience with BCR's since the mid 80's, the one I had back then and the 2 I have now are of great quality. There was a time in between when BCR went to shite and had a bad rep because of it. If you had any knowledge of the guitars they make you wouldn't be using that video as a reference. You should have personal experience with things before you spread around misinformation to people.

although I like and own a BCR for that price I'd go with Ibanez as they have more choices in that price range. now used you can find neck thru BCR's and in that case then I'd consider that route.

Depends on what you want. The midrange BC's are good, as well as Ibanez. Go used if anything!
