So this will be the thread in which I both post pictures and ask advice from the sages here on UG. This is my 1984 Cort Les Paul Double Cut copy:

Yes, I bought it exactly like this. Planning on keeping the pickguard (possibly cutting a new one that isn't so weirdly shaped.

I just ordered scarlet alcohol based wood dye and oil wood filler from ReRanch and 32oz Tru-Oil and 0000 steel wool from Amazon. I already have 1000 and 2000 sandpaper lying around from drop fill projects.

Plan of action:
1. Strip this awful sparkly off while finish with a heat gun and 60 grit.
2. Level the stripped wood with 320 grit.
3. Alcohol dye. 5 (or 10?) coats with 1000 grit in between each coat.
4. Grain filler. Dye it black and do a ceruse/doghair finish (depends if the grain on this plywood plays nice with me or not). I dunno how many coats I should do of grain filler. Any suggestions?
5. Tru-Oil. 10 coats, 2000 grit wet sand in between each coat. Polish with denim to satin finish.

So heat gun did indeed mess up my day. Wound up just sanding it after the layers of the plywood started separating when I applied heat and a scraper (which explains the big light chunk missing from the back). Overall the grain isn't too bad, though! Excited for the dye and filler to (hopefully) come tomorrow.

We can see here the superior quality plywood used by Cort in the mid 80s (Alder? Aasswood? Who the hell knows?! ). And that maple(?) neck is obviously a tribute to EVH with not one, but two knots!

I'm sorry nobody else seems to care about this thread, and unfortunately I know nothing about refinishing.

I just wanted to say that: I agree that old finish had to go, but i frigging LOVE that wild-looking original pick guard.

I liked the concept, the execution could have been better, though. That's why I'm re-doing it.

On another note, I applied the "scarlet" wood dye today. I think there was a mix up....

Interesting. I was thinking of doing the same thing to a pawn shop/garage sale type of guitar. Definitely want to see how you went about things. Subscribed.

This is definitely going to be an improvement over the original. What the hell were they thinking?

I'm positive that guitar didn't come with that pickguard, If I remember right they didn't come with a pickguard at all. Somebody installed that themselves.

@TS
I would leave the pickguard off, It will look much better without it.

It didn't come with a pickguard, just pickup mounting rings. I bought it how it was in the very fist picture.

Anyway, an update.

So after letting this thing dry totally overnight I walked into my garage to see this monstrosity. I'm talking to Bill from ReRanch about it. I'm 99% sure I got the wrong color. No way I mixed it or applied it wrong.

It's pink. Literally printer cartridge CMYK magenta. Like they completely forgot to put the yellow in it, according to this chart.

I actually think that could be pretty cool looking. I'm picture deep gloss with metal flake over that. The guitar does have a cool shape.

I agree it's a nice color. But it completely wrecks the aesthetic I was going for, which was something like this:

Now That that's wrecked, you might as well put that crazy pick guard on your new ink cartridge special.

So I worked it out with Bill from reranch. Got some alcohol based Cherry/Heritage Red (basically Gibson Faded Cherry red). I decided to not bleach it as he said, though. I opted to sand it and let the extra dye in the grain really darken it before I applied the new dye.

And holy crap this color is so much better, plus the alcohol dye is a lot easier to apply and I really like it a whole lot better overall. Great stuff.

Last update until the guitar is playable again.

Done with the refinish. Still need to cut the pickguard, rewire and string it up. The color is a lot brighter and a little more orange to the eye of my crappy iPhone Camera. Plus the lighting is awful today.

Necrobump this sh*t!

So I got sick if this thing hanging in my wall completely unusable like it pays rent. Put the old pickguard back on, wired it up and it actually doesn't look half bad with the new color! Just gotta get some strings and I'm ready to jam to some Gov't Mule again

Dude, I really dig it. Such an improvement, and I'm a sucker for stained finishes. The color sort of reminds me of a vintage SG color. Anyways, nice job dude, looking forward to seeing pics of the new pickguard!

Glad to see you kept the pick guard the way it was. The all chrome hardware looks great with that color too.

Nice Work.
