Hello everyone,

I remember that around two or three years ago, Santana did a "cover" of a song but actually just soloed over the original song. I don't remember what that song was though! I know the track was not off the Guitar Heaven album. The song was a pretty recent song I think, and it's like a sort of laid back reggae-ish type track? Sorry I can't provide much description about it, I just remembered it now because I was listening to Lana Del Ray's West Coast and though that if Santana did that over West Coast it would be an amazing song as well. If anyone can remember what that song was I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks,
Walrus

No, it's not on the guitar heaven album, which makes my search so much harder...

Well, besides those, the only covers I think Santana has done are Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va," Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal," and Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love".

Perhaps it was someone emulating Carlos's style...maybe Los Lonely Boys?

Naw, Carlos has covered dozens of songs over the years. He freely pulls from a lot of influences, puts his stamp on them, and mixes them in with his own stuff. This list is pretty complete:

"Your sound is in your hands as much as anything. It's the way you pick, and the way you hold the guitar, more than it is the amp or the guitar you use." -- Stevie Ray Vaughan

"Anybody can play. The note is only 20 percent. The attitude of the motherfucker who plays it is 80 percent." -- Miles Davis

Huh- oddly enough, I looked on that website, and it only listed the ones I mentioned. I must have been directed to an outdated page.

And as I look at the list, I'm embarrassed to admit that I simply forgot many of those.

No, it's not on that list.... *sighs in frustration*
It wasn't exactly a cover, it was just him soloing over the original song untouched in any way... The song was sort of reggaeish is guess? Not really sure how to describe it, it wasn't anything like Bob Marley reggae. The closest I can get is that West Coast reminded me of it, and I know that's not really much help but I guess they might be somewhat sonically similar?

... Yes I did enjoy typing that alliteration

I heard it on youtube. Someone at my school in the musician's club was playing the video/song on his phone (it wasn't a live video, the image was just an image of the album/single cover, and no I don't remember what it looked like but I know it wasn't a Santana album) and I happened to overhear it...

It's not that John Lee Hooker/Santana video (although that is pretty cool), I know the song is recent, like post 2010 I'm pretty sure.
