Gonna be seeing these guys in like a week.

I'm hoping that it'll end the constant battle of me we really wanting to like the band but never quite managing it.

Srsly I should like this band but I just don't.

The problem I find is that most people listen to Meshuggah expecting "riffs", when it's closer to post-rock and ambient music than anything "metal". It's all about how 3 or 4 patterns can make something so much more hypnotic and atmospheric than any BTBAM worship tech death.

But you know this already, so I'll just wish you good luck and a great show. They really are crushing live. Break The Bones Whose Sinews Gave it Motion maybe one of their most boring studio tracks, but live it damned near tore my face off.

I expect industrial atmosphere and interesting grooves.

They kinda do both. But not to the extent that I like it.

I'd rather listen to Fear Factory or Vildjharta at this stage but we shall see. Even if I don't like them live the other two bands are Periphery and the DTP. So it'll be an awesome show anyway.

Periphery really are one of the tightest bands I've ever seen live, so them and Meshuggah will go perfectly together (even if the crowd might end up fighting itself out of pure spite), and Devin... is... well, Devin. Expect hugeness.

This will be myyyyy... erm.... 5th time seeing Devin... I think?

Islington Academy
Leicester o2 Academy for an Acoustic Show
Download 2012 set
The Retinal Circus.

Yeah this will be the 5th time since like 2010...

Seen him twice now, and as much as I LOVE Devin, and as much as the show ruled... Does the overuse of his samples feel kinda weird to you? Like, just really odd seeing a five piece band on stage, and knowing that there's probably more music being played by laptops than the dudes with instruments in their hands...
#3290
I barely notice the samples tbh *shrugs*

It's mainly just pads and stuff so I'm fine with it. His music is multilayered so it kinda needs it.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I'd rather him with than without, it just bugs me a tiny bit. Especially when they're playing something reasonably simple, and all of the "interesting" stuff is actually just the keyboards or samples. Devin and co just playing really simple stuff while the laptop handles the parts everyone came here for

Nowhere near as bad as TesseracT's guitarists both playing the exact same parts while a tape played all of the clean melodies, I'll admit.

Song writing is song writing. I mean it'd be cool if he had like 5 synth players on stage... but it'd just be impracticable in about every way imaginable xD

Haha, less that it's not a good idea, more that he can't afford it xD

Saw Meshuggah last sunday. It was amazing! My ears are still ringing and my neck is still hurting, but it as worth it. Dick Lövgren is lovely and holy hell Jens is an awesome frontman!

I saw them at the Devy gig and I think I'm starting to "get" the band.

It's like the soundtrack to a really violent H.R.Giger painting right?

It's not so much about the riffs, but the atmosphere and grooves?

Pretty much. I mean, it's about the "riffs" to a certain extent, but only as far as "damn that riff has a groovey atmosphere".

Great, great album. I'd say Clockwork, title track, Ivory Tower, and Into Decay are my favorites so far, but it's a damn solid album. Need to still give it a few spins.

Sadly, it seems we will never return to the sheer aggression of "Obzen".

I wish they did more of the string skip-oriented riffs like on Combustion and the first four or five minutes of Dancers. Somehow they manage to keep it from sounding cheesy as fuck.
