I recently purchased all his studio albums on CD to replace my old LP's and 45rpm's and it got me thinking, does anybody else here love Jim Croce as much as I do? To me he's the definitive singer-songwriter of the 70's. I in my mind the 60's had Bobby Dylan, the 70's had Jim Croce. So yeah I'll start the conversation off with;

What Jim Croce song do you think best represents his talents?

Yeah I like how he balances out the mellow with stuff like 'Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown'.

You Don't Mess Around With Jim would be my favorite... but I only have a Greatest Hits CD so I've heard only about 15 songs of his or so.
Please don't confront me with my failures. I had not forgotten them.

That one's good. I prefer Bad, Bad Leroy Brown though if you're talking about more up-tempo Croce songs.

Haven't gotten too into Croce, but I've loved "Have to Say I Love You in A Song" since I was a kid.

To everybody just getting into Croce, pick up 'Life & Times' at your local CD shop. Good place to get started.

Jim Croce's pretty good. I especially like "I Got a Name." Of course, not quite as good as Gordon Lightfoot.

Yes sir! Jim was GREAT. I LOVE his music. We lost a great composer singer. Why do the greats go too early? Life sucks sometimes....

Time in a Bottle all the way man!

Word, "Time in a Bottle" has a magic to it. It makes me think of playing an acoustic on the beach of something. Great tone to that song.

I saw AJ Croce play today. He was very good, but his amps were far to loud. He did alot of Jim's songs, and a lot of original ones.

That's cool, I found a few of his tracks online. He won't be anything though unless he steps out of dad's shadow.

^ Carwash Blues is an interesting one, yeah that one and Bad Bad Leroy Brown really sum up that early 70's singer songwriter explosion for me, that and Fire and Rain by James Taylor.

My wife and my son in law (you all know him as cord) love Jim Croce. I never liked his music that much but I can respect his talent. Songs like Rapid Roy the Stock Car Boy has absolutely amazing guitar parts. I don't know if I should call them solo's or if I should call it rhythm because the rhythm guitar played solos through the whole song. Very few people can do that and make it work. So I don't like his music, but my hat is off to him anyway.

My lifelong friend and guitar partner from my childhood and I love and played Croce a lot. Time in a bottle, Operator, Photographs and Memories, New York's not my Home, quintessential singer-songwriter ballads-how do you choose? He was simply the best.
