My JSX can get classic rock on the crunch channel, metalcore on the Ultra, and the Cleans are better than half decent.

Sweet I think I may just head for a 212 combo...GC has one used for 500$ in 9/10 condition

Yeah, I see them going on GC used for 500-600 all day long, so you'll have plenty of time to think about it if you're not sure. Try to get one with a footswitch, it would be worth an extra $25 or so.

Ok man thanks for the help It just sounds like the jsx has everything I want so I'm sure it's the one.

Any JSX owners have the hum that occurs on all three channels? Only affected by the master volume and, on mine, the reverb? It's such an awesome amp, but that hum is annoying. I wonder if there's some manufacturing defect that isn't really well known.

recently bought an Ultra 212 (60 watts) and i'm a pretty happy guy. decent clean channel and the ultra channnel has more gain than i need. i like the active eq on the ultra channel as it really gives you some great sonic options. highly recommended.

I posted your thread where most of the amp techs spam.

Hey guys, I have a problem with my XXX head and I think it's better to post it here than making a new thread.

Whenever I try to switch to the clean channel, it never truly switches over. What it always does is cuts out gain from the Crunch channel while remaining on it. Amp is on the ultra channel, only pedal I'm using is an ISP G-string noise gate in front and through the loop. The footswtich is reletively new (Purchased new in September or October 2012). The green light comes on that says the Clean channel is on on the amp, but the light for the Crunch channel remains on.

Holy shiz its been 5 years since I made this thread... Wow.

Current EQ settings for metal are (ultra channel):

Gain - 7
Bass - 7
Mid - 4
Treble - 6
Reverb - 5

Ive been playing KSE's new stuff and it sounds pretty good

That sounds like a power tube issue.

First time posting in this group. I got a Peavey JSX, and I'm considering swapping out the JJECC83 preamp tubes that came stock in mine for a more Doom Metal tone. I find the Ultra channel to be brittle and grainy sounding. I want it warmed up and thicker. From the research I have done this is what I have come up with for the pre amp
V1 - JJ ECC83
V2 - Mullard ECC83
V3 - Mullard ECC83
V4 - Svetlana 12AX7 / Sovtek 5751 / Sovtek 12AX7 LPS
Any thoughts??

I currently own a 6505 plus but I found a jsx with six L6 tubes and I really like the tone

Hey everyone, I have an issue with my XXX that I just got used. It is crazy noisy, especially on the Ultra channel, so bad it is almost unusable. It is way worse than my 6505+ ever was. Are there any common issues that I can try fixing before I call the doctor?

I'd check for a microphonic preamp tube.

Also make sure to get some good contact cleaner and clean the fx loop connections.

Thanks ThunderPunk. Just ordered a Tung-Sol 12AX7, thinking of putting it in the V1. The rest of the tubes are Sovtek LPS. Will that still be too fizzy? I like a little fizz but not like what it has right now.
#903
Microphonics like ThunderPunk said is probably the issue
Unplug the guitar
Turn up the amp a fair bit
Spread head and cab as far apart as possible (while connected of course w/speaker cable)
Tap each preamp tube one at a time with a pencil
If you hear the tapping coming through the speaker then it is probably microphonic
Replace

I think some JJ's would help.
LPS for Phase inverter.
Don't spray contact cleaner into socket - spray tube pins
JJ or JAN 5751 is a good tube too for a bit extra
EQ in the loop

311ZOSOVHJH Thanks for the advice! I looked up the JAN 5751, and it was a little too much for me right now, maybe when I get paid again. I found the microphonic tube, it was my PI. I pulled the LPS out of the V1 and moved it to the PI, then threw a Tung-Sol in the V1, and man is it nice. The cleans are warm and sparkly, and the Ultra is thick and saturated, and absolutely perfect for live use. Still a tiny bit of hum, but that is probably my pickup. It's not even noticeable playing live. Thank you guys for all of your help.
