I tend to think of this band as a Modest Mouse with more win. These guys do the whole indie alt folk dreary sound, but they just have a better sound than Modest Mouse do. They've got four albums out:

Like the Excorcist, but More Breakdancing
Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them
In Bocca Al Lupo
Red of Tooth and Claw

Personally, their latest wasn't that amazing but the other three are fantastic.

Anybody else listen to/know of Murder by Death?

Edit: I'm not hating on Modest Mouse either, I love some of their stuff.

lol, well, they add this Western tinge to all their music, and the movie was a parody of Westerns, so...

i've only heard Red Of Tooth and Claw, it was alright. i might look into the others if you say they are much better.

i have both In Bocca Al Lupo and Red of Tooth and Claw. red of tooth is definitely a bit easier to get into as it isnt quite as strange as in bocca al lupo.

really like this band. the guys voice is incredible. its johnny cash with such a powerful sound behind it. their live show is pretty ridiculous

I have heard Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them and a few other miscellaneous songs by them, but none of it really jumped at me. I sort of bored me. But then again, I don't really like Modest Mouse that much. I'd actually say I like Murder By Death more than Modest Mouse.

Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them is my favorite album by them.

And I agree, I like Murder By Death more than Modest Mouse.

They actually have five albums, Good Morning Magpie, being the latest. If you include their instrumental soundtrack to a book called Finch, they have six. Plus they have a rarities album called Skeletons in the closet which is a compilation of sorts. Also they have various split singles on vinyl.

I have seen them live eight times, and they are incredible. The cello player Sarah is an absolute thrill to watch.

Who Will Survive. . . from start to finish I think is their greatest album, but I believe In Bocca. . ., and Red of Tooth. . ., both have better songs that can really stand on their own.
Namely: Brother, Shiola, Boy Decide, I'm Coming Home, Rum Brave, Ball & Chain, '52 Ford, Spring Break 1899.

I believe the film Murder by Death is a parody of Film Noir or mysteries, rather than westerns, either way it's nice to find somebody else who enjoys their music.

If you like MbD I suggest you check out other bands I've seen them tour with.

Great song, don't know why I'm just hearing it now. Band is so good.

I Came Around is a flippin' rad ass diddy. I saw them two weeks ago, and they played a song featuring a theremin that shot sparks.

It was super boss.

New album September something, something.

I'm so hopelessly in love with this band.

We're pretty much the only ones though. I read that there are recording a cover of Kenny Roger's Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) a song that was featured in the film The Big Lebowski. I can't wait to hear it.

My current obsession.

Murder by Death covering the mythical beast known as Tom Waits.

Sounds not a bit like the original, but it's pretty damn good anyways.

The new cover album is fairly enjoyable even if it was randomly thrown together by various fans, and recorded super quick.

You can't beat Elliott Smith, Tom Waits, and INXS covers on the same album.
