This is thread for the discussion of songs that you (the learner) wants to learn. we have suggestions at the front, but if you still need more, post about it. if you have an odd request, like something with a violin part, or a song in Eflat minor, ask.
This is a list of songs, and genres, for new players. This list is based on difficulty per genre, and many of the bass parts are going to be different. As an example, a song that is expert in pop would be medium in jazz. This is not a definitive list, more a guiding point for those at loss as to what to play next, or learn to play. For a new player, I would find a few songs you recognize, and try to learn them. For an experienced player I would find a genre description you like and learn some songs from that. This list is subject to change! Have fun playing!!!!

by the way! know some specific thing you want, like a romantic bassline or something really fast paced, just ask.

Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)

metal
Metal bass. Let those guitars turn up and drive it- you can punch past without that stupid level of distortion, you can get guttural roaring lows and explosive highs. or you can get clack, lower your action, and use your frets to clack up your sound. You can even join in the distorted frenzy, throwing on some fuzz to play some grind or for your wicked bass solo. for metal, tone is not a worry, because as long as it sounds brutal with the band, you can do whatever you want.

Tim Commerford (RATM)

hard rock
Make a beat and smile. Flip on some drive, or heavy it up with some bass. You can do whatever you want as long as everyone knows that the only reason that guitar is soloing is because you’re letting him. Because you and your 27 amps are nice like that. Tonewise, you want to stand out when you riff, but to blend in when you follow those guitars.

classic rock
Old School. Acid Rock. Vintage Rock. Hippie Music. The classics. The bands your dad showed you when you were a kid. the ones you listened to back when you were poor. When the electric bass was young. When the world was going to change. because, you know, with a little wooliness and a passive bass, you may just start a revolution.

That’s how they always did it. But not how you will. Because you are not one of these ‘clean only’ or ‘feel the bass’ types, you wanna be heard. And you wanna be different. Because that is how you like it. and you’ll load on effects, or slap in a slow song, or play completely clean (o_0) just because you feel like it.

Adam Nitti (Adam Nitti)

jazz
Improvised art, they call it. Jazz. The perfect genre. You don’t get a set riff, you walk from here to there. Or you just improvise over a little hook the horns are doing. Just keep it clear, and keep it deep. Because you’ll pull this song along into something perfect. Because nobody has heard it just like this before, or ever will again.

pop
Does it sell? Is it fresh? Is it new? Are you catchy? Are you precise? Because whatever you are, it’s gotta hit those ears, and they gotta freak out. because you complete that song with that one thing the bass does so well- make it interesting. So focus on the music, you tone freaks. because as long as it makes the girls scream your name, it’s gotta be good.

______core
power. There is nothing but power and rage, and who is strongest. The ‘core’ music, with it’s loud variations, from the original hardcore to post-hardcore, melodic hardcore, metalcore, skate punk, grindcore, thrashcore, and sludge metal is what you play, and however you have to, because you are there to make that mix edgy and heavy, you are making a wall of war, because this is the complexity of a serial killer with the rage of a rabid animal.

punk
sound. pure noise. an avalance of growl and power. This is punk, where the point was never the music, it was the excuse to get up on that soapbox and tell the world to blow off. with a pick in hand, and maybe an old Fender P-bass (or even a different bass, what are they doing telling you what to play?) you hammer that fast repeating bassline because you know every note you play is a grain of sand shoveled from foundations of the status quo.

if life was a country song, there wouldn’t be any war. we would all just ride into the sun, doing amazing things while we longed for that pretty girl (or cute guy) we left back in Tallahasee. Thats understandable. Welcome Home has alot of random fills that never repeat themselves so in all respects it's an easier song just hard to get it 100% right runnign through.
Edit: Ben's point too, but I never had a problem on the double thumping.

Personally I think it would make more sense for cross-genre comparison if you did a numerical scale. eg. Sequoia Throne may be the hardest out of all of that genre, but it's nowhere near something like Classical Thump.

I think it's a good collection of songs though.

I think Welcome Home is in expert because it utilises double thumbing. Which isn't an easy technique to get down well. The motion is simple, but making it sound good and full isn't.

I'd like to know Mic Todd's technique, because live, it seems, he utilises it quite a bit.
Also, I agree there are some cool bass fills in 'Welcome Home'.

Good job with this thread too!
