Ahh.. It's this time of year again. Just finished my last build so what could be more perfect time to start another? This will be the first guitar I make for someone other than myself. My little brother is the lead guitarist in a metal band (why does it seem to me that nowadays every ~20 year old has a metal band? ) and so I thought I'll make him a guitar for his 25th birthday. He's only 22 at the moment but I'll ignore that fact for now. Anyway, it'll be something like the last one but with a bit more edge and 'metal' to it. Specs and pics will follow.

UPDATE
This one is now finished. For final pics, look at post #191.

Well, not this either. Despite the fact that it's coming owner is a metalhead, it's not going to be a über-brutal church-burning war axe. Anyway, to compensate for the lack of pics here's how it's going to be (more or less):

- body shape similar to JEN Custom #2
- 2pc body made of European Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa)
- Flamed maple top (flat top with armrest)
- 5pc neck from the same block than the neck on #2
(flamed maple with 2 wenge stripes)
- PRS'ish 3+3 headstock with volute, double action truss rod
- ebony fretboard, 25,5" scale, 24 frets (6100 or 6105)
- no idea on inlays yet
- H/H pickups, not sure about make/model yet, could be actives, could be for
example Irongears with active preamp
- wenge pickuprings
- graphtech nut
- Schaller Hannes fixed bridge
- probably Schaller locking tuners

Next week I'll be planing and glueing the body and making templates. I'll have to wait for the top for a while since just won it on ebay.

Judging by the quality of your previous builds, your brother will NOT be disappointed.

Sounds amazing, and he's very lucky to have you as a brother, I'm sure.

*Finally lets his breath out after reading the specs*

This is it...

The fabled THIRD JEN Custom!

I highly recommend loading it with some TDMs Get an 8-Ball for the bridge...
Then there's this band called Slice The Cake...

Bunch of faggots putting random riffs together and calling it "progressive" deathcore.
Stupid name.
Probably picked "for teh lulz"

Might just do that if nothing better comes to mind. Today I glued the body blank and planed & sanded the neck blank. I also made my body template and that's what you'll get to see here. I'll also include a pic of the top wood (from ebay seller). Like my previous builds, this also is going to go quite slowly but bear with me...

Interesting horn shape. It's pointy, but not too pointy. They look a bit stunted, but I guess when you've got the neck on, it'll look great.

Also, that top wood is gorgeous!

Wow. How much did that maple go for?
28 CAD. Plus shipping... plus taxes... *sigh*

Very little progress this week, but at least something. I made a rough template for the headstock. The shape may still evolve. I also planed the body wood smooth. It's looking quite nice, it even shows a bit of flame'ish figure.

I take it's just a thin laminate then? I'm trying to find some 3/4" thick flamed or quilted maple for a carved top. It's proving difficult.

Yep, only 0.33" (~8mm). It'll be a flat top with arm contour.

Ermm, if you're taking suggestions, I'd personally like it more with a longer top horn. Only the part after the "break". But that's just about my only complaint.

That's nice =) but I think with this one I'll go with transblack.

I thought about it too, actually I already made it a bit longer. I'll have to do a mockup with the neck and see how it looks before I cut it out.

As you can see, I'm going mega-slow at the moment. Mostly that's because of the lack of top wood (still on the way, hope the mailman hasn't lost it...) and fb + truss rod. This week I sawed the neck and headstock angle and glued the headstock 'ears' on. That neck wood was a good buy, there's still enough left for a third neck

mmmm, that neck's gonna be pretty hot

and have you come up with any more ideas for inlays?
I'm always a big fan of offset tiny dots, but just a single 12th fret inlay would look pretty cool too
